The biggest move the Miami Dolphins made last offseason was the product of a trade the team had been working on since the NFL scouting combine.

The Dolphins traded down five spots in the first round and acquired starting inside linebacker Kiko Alonso and starting cornerback Byron Maxwell from the Philadelphia Eagles, and with the 13th overall pick Miami selected Laremy Tunsil, who turned into the team's starting left guard.

While that trade was heavily criticized last March because of Alonso's injury history and Maxwell's bloated salary, in one move the Dolphins gained three quality starters.

That might be why Mike Tannenbaum, the team's vice president of football operations, said he's shopping for trades that can help Miami improve the overall roster this offseason.

“We’re going to look at every avenue to improve the team. That could mean trades that start around the combine, and then we’ll get into free agency,” Tannenbaum said on Wednesday at the Senior Bowl. “Our focus philosophically is we’re going to try to keep our own [free agents] as best we can. But [plan to] be opportunistic via free agency or trades, and draft as well as we can.”

Trading away draft picks...worked well for Tannenbaum in New York...:rolleyes2: Clearly he has learned nothing from his time with the Jets.

Trading down in the draft perhaps. They don't have enough picks to give away for players this year.

I'm pretty sure the Jets had one draft with just 3 picks...might have been 4 picks or maybe both but Tannenbaum is not talking about trading down he's talking about trading picks for players on other teams. If you do it the way the Patriots do it...players who don't necessarily fit their current teams but would fit the scheme in New England and carry a low value for example the Patriots traded for Randy Moss and gave up just a 4th round pick...then it would probably make us an older team but we would still get talent. However, that's not what Tannenbaum has done over his career and he basically got lucky last year with Alonso and Maxwell with just a trade down. Lucky in that Maxwell started playing better and Alonso played in 15 of 16 games after just playing in 11 of 32 the last two seasons. I'm still not sold he can stay healthy for a full season especially playing MLB.

The other issue is that when you trade for players and they become successful you have less time on that rookie contract or 2nd contract before they want to get paid. Kenny Stills is a good example...2 years out of his 4 on his rookie contract and now he's gonna get paid. Makes it harder to manage the cap and keep the talent level high.

just for giggles any player you'd pay the price to trade up for in the draft? have to be a lb de most likely...keeping in mind the price from 22 is gonna be STEEP to get into the mid teens even

No trades for draft picks unless it's a trade DOWN. Gase has gained some influence since last draft so I doubt (hope) fans will see much in the way of big trades.

We don't really know how Gase feels about the draft though. I just remember him saying several times how young this team was last year so he may be onboard with trading for veterans.

Trade Caroo to the Bills for Kyle Williams and use Suh a little more often on the outside.

If you want Kenny Stills and Jarvis Landry then all the usual suspects need to be cut or traded including Albert and
Pouncey, because we need strong defenders who are going to stay on the field a helluva a lot more than we need to be paying exorbitant and obscene contracts to a couple of OL guys who ranked at the rock bottom of the league last year.

kyle Williams been hurt a lot lately...getting long in the tooth

been a good player though no doubt about that

What was REALLY fortunate about that trade was Tunsil falling to us at 13. But yeah.

I'm not sure we'd save anything by cutting or trading Pouncey. Might even take a cap hit on that one.

And I agree, which is why I said "big" trades (should have said "flashy"). That said, I don't think Gase is opposed to small trades (e.g., from22 to 20), but I don't expect giving up 3-4 picks to move up nor do I expect him to overpay for any moves. On the positive side, Gase and gang seem to be better at evaluating talent than anything in the last decade, but that's not saying much. As for trading vets, again, I don't expect anything flashy. My preference is NO draft trades, be smart about ANY trades, and PLEASE don't go for a top 3 FA. Too many needs.

I think most around here feel the same. It just makes sense.

The trade that seems the most interesting off the top of my head is ... acquiring Jimmy Graham. Given the talent and depth of this TE class, and Seattle's cap problems, it is a cheap trade market for Graham if Seattle needs to offload him. Trading for him would probably be cheap compared to other years. Graham is a TE that could instantly change this offense.

Gase's offense everywhere except Miami has been focused on the TE ... and we haven't had one. Specifically lacking is the seam threat that Gase has used so effectively. While Graham isn't an asset in the run game and does have some overlap with Jarvis Landry (both slot-ish receiver types), Graham provides a dynamic element truly lacking in Miami. Graham has the size and speed to present a perfect seam threat target, as well as the size and athleticism to present the perfect red zone target. While people always seem to think the TE position is OK ... we haven't had a top tier TE in recent memory. In the draft guys like OJ Howard, David Njoku and Bucky Hodges have great potential, but those will cost high draft picks ... and Graham may just be better than all 3.

Obviously, it depends on the compensation, but I would definitely be in favor of exploring this trade.

Gase most likely has 4 priority positions to fill: LB, DL, RG and TE. Given that he is an offensive coach who calls the plays and bases his offense around the TE ... I wouldn't be surprised to see his highest priority be TE. Most of the fans have a strong preference for defense, and given Bushrod's performance (mostly while injured) last season it is fair to consider that a huge need. But, our offense-heavy draft last year suggests that Gase is pushing for his pieces ... none bigger than the TE in his scheme. So, don't be surprised if we don't prioritize LB or DL, but rather attempt to move heaven and earth to secure a top tier TE.
