Here’s a few quick thoughts heading into Day 5 of training camp …

1. Maybe it’s not Shawn Murphy’s job to lose, after all.
The right guard position looks like it could be up in the air again.

Tony Sparano said the job was Murphy’s job to lose. But Wednesday, journeyman Joe Berger, the team’s back-up center, worked with the first unit, though coaches might just want to get someone else some reps.
Meanwhile, Donald Thomas, who opened 2008 as the starter at right guard, took part in his first contact drill since he broke his foot in the opener vs. the Jets.

The competition for the one spot up in the air on the O-line might just be heating up.

2. Defensive Phillip Merling looks like he’s ready to take the next step.
The past couple of days, Merling has been sharing first-team snaps on the right side with Tony McDaniel, a fourth-year pro acquired in an off-season trade with Jacksonville. But this might have less to do with what Merling isn’t doing than coaches hoping to get a look at McDaniel.

Merling, the No. 32 in the 2008 draft, comes into camps in much better shape than a year ago when a sports hernia injury cost him draft spots and several months of training. He said he’s up five pounds to 295, burning a good bit of baby fat and adding muscle.

yeah the fatigue factor is interesting too... we are working them HARD right off the bat... i dont feel we worked them this hard so early last year... i could be wrong though

i don't recall either, but on the other hand, everyone's been around since May. it's no surprise the work is taking its toll a little bit on the younger guys.

We definitely didn't do this many two a days early on last year.
I bet they'll ease up towards the end of TC.

I think by working them so hard early on, you really weed out the unfit players from the fit players.

i doubt this is in Sparano's dictionary

I agree man, last year i went to the training camp and this year I did as well...This years TC way more intense than last year...every position guys look like they know what their doing and running full speed..DL and OL are bangin in the trenches pretty ferocious.

Great to hear that about Merling, hopefully he continues his progress

The Parcells method is to push you hard 365 days a year. Many players have mentioned that the firmly believe it shortens their careers.

But, it calls for a very tough offseason program and hard workouts throughout all of training camp. The results tend to be strong regular season performances and first round playoff exits. But hey, at least his teams are in the playoffs.

IMO the offseason training lends itself to less injuries. If you looks at the 07 season when everyone got hurt, our offseason training was a joke. Sparano worked them as hard as he could last off season, I remember him talking about how everyone needed to improve their conditioning.

Joe Berger ain't winning the right guard spot. If it's up in the air at all, it will be between Murphy and Thomas.
