Miami Dolphins talking points: Lex Hilliard a special teams star

Dolphins have a short week before playing at San Diego Sunday, which means they’ll need to address these talking points in a hurry:

1. Lex Hilliard may be a rising special teams star.

Hilliard had three tackles on kickoff returns – and another on a play nullified by a penalty – as Miami held Indianapolis to an average of 22 yards on five kickoff returns.
Hilliard, of course, seemed unlikely to make the team out of training camp due to a glut of running backs. When he did, it was made clear that his immediate future would depend on his special teams abilities. He’s made big improvements in that area so far.

When training camp began, it was expected Brian Hartline might be a big special teams contributor due to his combination of speed and grit. With Hartline getting first-team snaps, Hilliard has filled that void.

Many of us were rooting for Hilliard to make the roster and it is great to see him contributing right away on specials teams. Having got the opportunity to make the team, Lex appears to be giving his all. Good luck to him.
