The encouraging news about the Dolphins’ tight end situation: Dion Sims appears to be much improved, especially as a receiver, and is in good position to land the No. 2 tight end job behind Charles Clay. The unsettling development: Of the seven tight ends on the roster, only three are fully healthy: Sims, Kyle Miller and recent addition Brett Brackett.
Clay (knee), Michael Egnew (concussion symptoms) and Harold Hoskins (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday, and rookie Arthur Lynch remained limited with an undisclosed injury.
The Dolphins would prefer not to play Lynch in Friday’s preseason game against the Falcons in Atlanta, barring a change of heart. So Dolphins fans will see plenty of Sims, Miller and Brackett.
Sims has impressed throughout camp, catching several passes over the middle and finding ways to get open in the end zone.
“He’s catching the ball very well,” coach Joe Philbin said. “We’ve seen him in the passing game look and play faster. We’re encouraged by that. That’s something that can pay dividends for us this year. His blocking has gotten more consistent.”
Sims — who caught six passes for 32 yards as a rookie — said he has watched tape of Clay, Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez in an attempt to learn nuances of becoming a better receiving tight end. At 6-4 and 265 pounds, “my height and body will help me in the passing game,” he said. “I’m getting better body position.”

Tight ends coach Dan Campbell said Sims “has come a long way. He had a heck of a spring. In camp, he has proven he’s ready to take that next stride up.”

He's definitely a player i'm looking forward to seeing make plays this preseason, especially now that Clay isn't playing. I want to see Sims get separation and become a better run blocker.

Would be a great addition if we had a second strong te. Plus w him we get an addition of a good blocker up front to help bolster the running game. Would be great to have him as a weapon at te and we can line clay up in the backfield, what great mismatches that can create....

I am rooting for Sims and Lynch. I think they can make us 3TE strong which would be sweet

Michael Egnew, Gator Hoskins and Arthur Lynch don't help their roster chances by not being healthy and available to play. Coach Campbell did a great job of developing Charles Clay last season. It sounds like Dion Sims is the biggest improver at TE, this year. Joe went out of his way to throw plaudits to Sims re his catching and blocking. We know that Charles Clay is the man, but the #2 TE on the team may get a more playing time in the new system with Lazor and he needs to be able to block well. How good a blocker is Kyle Miller?

Sims is one of few players I knew about before we drafted him and hoped we would get him. All I have heard is negatives about him through the media and I have heard nothing else from word of mouth. So I have been hoping, but it sure is good to see something positive about him finally. I hope it's true. I think he has good physical ability. Shows nice soft hands sometimes and seems very agile for a big guy too. If his route running has improved he should be a good TE for us. Not a deep seam buster type, but he'll get you some yards in the middle of the field and fight for a few extra, plus he can help in the red zone.

This is good news. It would be nice for a bigger TE to make a jump and maybe Sims is poised to do it.

Egnew did improve in his blocking and physicality but it's astounding to me that he came out of MO with a reputation as a seam threat and poor blocker. He's become the opposite as he seems to be a slow learner on route running. Funny how that MO system is misleading. He caught a lot of balls there but it wasn't due to any sophistication in his routes.

Anyway, whereas Egnew has made slow improvement it would be great if Sims has a spike in improvement. We could use at least one guy to separate himself and emerge as the number 2 guy behind Clay. Sims sounds like he may be the guy in that regard.

Besides Tannehill, Sims is the one guy on offense that has the chance to develop into the type of elite player that every other team would give their left nut to have. He was rated the number 5 TE in the nation at one point and dual-recruited for basketball and football. Its great to hear he's been studying Gonzalez's and Gates' games.

He was on Joe Rose this morning. Said he dropped a little more weight this offseason and worked on speed and agility. We haven't had a one-two punch at TE since 2008 when Anthony Fasano and David Martin caught half the teams TDs that season. It would be nice to run some two TE sets and it not automatically be a run.

At one point early on coming in, expectations for Sims were higher than originally for Clay. If he can unexpectedly turn into this season's game changing or influencing surprise, it'll turbo-charge our offense.

His one handed catch for the touchdown last season was a thing of beauty.
I have had high hopes for him ever since.

Good to see he is picking up where he left off last yr, I thought he had a very good rookie yr, he has size, good speed and caught the ball like a WR he just needed to develop his blocking and get stronger hopefully he is more of a complete TE this yr.....

Nice post bro. I have been pulling for him since last year. I am sure Lazor will use him better than Sherman did.
