Make no mistake: Dolphins coach Tony Sparano loves Patrick Cobbs.
Sparano spoke more than once last season about how, when he was on the Dallas Cowboys' staff, he heard Cobbs' name constantly when he was becoming the most productive runner in the history of the North Texas program.
Sparano never makes promises publicly about how he will use a player, but he seems certain to find a place in the offense for Cobbs, who is in his third season with the Dolphins.
"It's going to be really hard for me to give up on this guy," Sparano said. "I really like Pat Cobbs. I like what he brings to our football team."
Cobbs touched the ball only 31 times last season but averaged 7.3 yards per carry and 14.3 yards per reception and scored three touchdowns. His two TD receptions at Houston made him the first Dolphins running back in 33 years with more than one in a game. He also tied for the team lead in special-teams tackles with 16.
"People who come in here and compete with Pat Cobbs, they have an all-day sucker when they do that," Sparano said.
