DAVIE — As the Dolphins’ new coaching staff grades players already on the roster, it will become clearer just how much work must be done to get a team from 7-9 to where it wants to go.

And as this process takes place, George Godsey, the incoming tight ends coach, will see what he’s up against.

After years of getting too little production out of the position — and getting eaten up by opposing tight ends — the Dolphins spent two draft picks on upgrading their tight ends last year without getting the desired return on the investment. And while it’s clearly too early to give up on Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe, it is obvious there’s a sizable gap between what they’ve shown and what Godsey prefers from his featured tight end.

If Smythe started to show better route running, he's already a capable blocker, and has proven to have good hand to catch the ball.

Smythe is the only potential option.

But he doesn’t threaten the opposition enough to ever really not be paired with something else

T.J. Hockenson is likely to be the best talent available if Miami stays at #13.

If that's the case, they shouldn't hesitate to take him. I project him to be one of the best TE's in the league within 2 years.

THIS 1000 times. To me, assuming QB is a no go, Hockenson is the best player available and to me it’s not close.

But what about building the OL/DL first, as a lot of ppl around here are suggesting? As much as I respect HOCKENSON, I can't see them going TE in the 1st (unless there's a trade down). I'm with going after MURRAY, if he drops to the 10-13 range or TRADE DOWN if possible. That's just me though.

I think we're already set for the coming year with O'LEARY, GESICKI & SMYTHE (and better coaching). Now depending on how they show themselves this upcoming year, we may be looking at adding another TE in 2020. Fingers crossed, all 3 show improvement & we can concentrate on other positions. Fingers crossed!!!

What a disappointment Gesicki has been, not really surprised though. I don't think Gesicki is the answer as our "seam threat" TE. I would rather roll with O'Leary and draft another TE this year

Dolphins don't have completed TE on roster, every body does one thing good.

The 2018 season produced the fewest passing yards a Dolphin team has thrown since 2003. Whether we have an every down TE on this roster nobody knows since the passing offense as a whole was awful. Our 2 leading WR's didn't even crack 600 yds and our most targeted WR only had 1 TD. I'm not sure what people were expecting out of a rookie TE who played less than half of the teams offensive snaps and a good portion of the snaps he did play was left out to block. Look at any WR/TE/HB receiving numbers last year nobody put up respectable numbers throughout the whole season (Wilson didn't finish the season).

There was a thread a while back where people generally agreed coaching is more important than talent. Yet despite having a bad coach in Gase, people are expecting a rookie TE to overcome, how does that make any sense?

Given all the holes this team has, I can’t see them drafting a tight end in the first round. Kyle Brady, anyone?

I mean people can hold out hope for Gesicki but I saw more than enough last year.

I don't think he'll ever be a functional TE in the NFL. There will be an athletic move or 2 that will have people pointing fingers about "see I told you" . . . but in the end there will be so much getting overpowered in all phases of the game that he'll remain a detriment to your offense.

Damn right his presence shouldn't stop you from improving the position.
