PHOENIX — There will be times Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase uses both of his new tight ends together next season.
Julius Thomas is the more likely pass-catcher, with hopes he can become an adequate blocker.
Anthony Fasano is the more likely run-blocker, though he could be a sneaky red-zone or short-yardage receiving threat.
But Thomas, if healthy, will probably be the only tight end on the field for many 1st-and-10’s. In those situations, Gase believes Thomas can create an advantage the club did not have last season.
Miami hopes Fasano, 32, can fill some of the blocking void left by Sims. Backup MarQuies Gray is also a solid blocker and receiver.

It's no secret Gase loves pass catching tight ends. Let's hope they can rekindle some of the flame they had in Denver together and were not getting Jordan Cameron 2.0

Never understood why we let Fasano go in the first place. He was reliable as a pass catcher, despite his speed, and he was a good blocker. Those types of TE's serve a purposes.

The same reason we let Dion Sims go. You don't pay 4 years 16+ million for a no.2 in line blocking tight end. You find those off the scrap heap in the 5th and 6th round, or sign a veteran stop gap for a fraction(like we did bringing him back this year).

I gotta admit these two separate seem uninspiring. Together, they are decent. What needs to be acknowledged is the idea that they may give away our plans pre-snap.

Hopefully we can use both in ways that will take advantage of the assumptions the other teams will make. It will be nice to get Fasano some receptions and Thomas, some run plays to his side that are successful. Time will tell.

I didn't know Fasano was only 32 - seems like he should be 36 or something by now - excellent.

Sims is a much better passing catching TE than he gets credit for. After all he was tied for 2nd on the team for TDs with just as many as Landry and Parker.

We upgraded the TE position and we may not be finished adding pieces. This draft has some big time talent at TE. It's going to be hard for Gase to resist.

I'm just worried that if Thomas is out with a nagging injury or whatever that we'll have no threat at all at TE as it stands now. Fasano is basically just a blocker now. Last season Sims was able to adequately handle things when Cameron got hurt but this season without Thomas who could do that?

Because most of the time he wasn't covered. The one time he was--because despite his height he isn't long or explosive--he made a fantastic catch, and concussed himself landing on the turf.

I think the answer is simple, Marqueis Gray steps up.

He certainly benefited at times from PA designs having him running shallow crossers to the backside of the play, but he also made plays down the seam in coverage.

You're not going to see physical plays like this from Julius Thomas either. This kinda **** will have Thomas riding the pine for a few games due to injury.
