On Day Two, seething rage turned to soothing reason. Bloodlust has had its run, and the mob's taste for human sacrifice has begun to subside.
Surviving the first 48 hours following Sunday's grievous playoff loss to the New England Patriots does not ensure continued employment for Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer. Far from it. Yet it does create a calmer climate for Dean Spanos' decision. It suggests management's next move will be made on sober reflection and not as a raving reflex.
Thanks to Bryan from Ohio for the link.If the final decision on Schottenheimer belonged to Martyphobic General Manager A.J. Smith, you'd bet the farm, the Fed and Fort Knox on a firing. Since the call belongs to Spanos, however, delay breeds doubt.
Complicating matters are the financial concerns over the $3 million-plus due Schottenheimer next season, the fairness issue of whether a coach fresh from a 14-2 season should be sacked for a playoff shortfall, and the painful precedent Spanos set when he sided with General Manager Bobby Beathard in his intramural spat with Bobby Ross in 1996.
Much as Smith wants Schottenheimer gone, it is not Spanos' job to appease his subordinates. Rather, it should be incumbent on them to coexist peacefully and productively so as not to bother the boss.
