On Day Two, seething rage turned to soothing reason. Bloodlust has had its run, and the mob's taste for human sacrifice has begun to subside.

Surviving the first 48 hours following Sunday's grievous playoff loss to the New England Patriots does not ensure continued employment for Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer. Far from it. Yet it does create a calmer climate for Dean Spanos' decision. It suggests management's next move will be made on sober reflection and not as a raving reflex.
If the final decision on Schottenheimer belonged to Martyphobic General Manager A.J. Smith, you'd bet the farm, the Fed and Fort Knox on a firing. Since the call belongs to Spanos, however, delay breeds doubt.

Complicating matters are the financial concerns over the $3 million-plus due Schottenheimer next season, the fairness issue of whether a coach fresh from a 14-2 season should be sacked for a playoff shortfall, and the painful precedent Spanos set when he sided with General Manager Bobby Beathard in his intramural spat with Bobby Ross in 1996.

Much as Smith wants Schottenheimer gone, it is not Spanos' job to appease his subordinates. Rather, it should be incumbent on them to coexist peacefully and productively so as not to bother the boss.
Thanks to Bryan from Ohio for the link.

He also sent an excerpt from an email from a beat writer in SD who believes that there will be a decision today (but no guarantees)

Screw AJ Smith, he's not getting jack from us. If he wants to fire him, then fire him, and whatever happens from that point on is none of his business. But he's not gonna squeeze a pick out of us for a 63-year-old Marty, that's for damn sure.

Here is an update from Fin Fan in Cali:

There is supposed to be an announcement in regards to Marty's status by the Thursday at the latest. There are mixed reports whether he stays or goes. The local station here is saying that Miami is interested if Marty goes. The local station here to listen to is : http://www.mty1090.com/

What decision is there for Marty to make? He's said he expects to stay, he has a contract. If there's any decision it's management whether to fire or retain him. I don't see him retiring.

Exactly. If he was to quit, the Chargers would still own his rights and he wouldn't be able to coach elsewhere without a team giving up compensation to the Chargers.

if marty gets fired do you think cam will step up and take the job?
