During the extended off season I told a few of my friends that the lockout had greatly reduced my desire to follow football as in depth as i normally would. They laughed at me and told me that the second the lockout was lifted, i'd fall back in love with the game and forget it ever happened. I half heartedly agreed with them and moved on.
The reality is - I don't enjoy watching football this year anywhere near as much as i used to and don't know who is more to blame: The NFL or the Miami Dolphins.
NFL
The lockout in itself was painful to sit through. We all knew that the season would commence on time, but the non stop bickering between Billionaires and Millionaires was too much to handle. I almost wanted the season to be cancelled - at least it would mean one less year of Tom Brady to worry about. Truthfully, the lockout soured me as a fan. I'm just not sure i'll ever get back to where i once was.
Roger Goodell - i get why he is trying to change the game. He has two agendas: Protect players to prevent future lawsuits when real concrete proof of concussions and brain trauma are made public & extend his season to further generate revenue.
My issue is that he has created a league where every single time a player is hit i immediately scan the field for a yellow flag. I'm almost worried that we'll get pressure on a Tom Brady type QB because a personal foul is likely to ensue. The fact of the matter is, Football in general isn't as enjoyable as it was a few years ago. I'm all for protecting a player - but the protection these All Pro QBs get is downright sickening.
Miami Dolphins
Here's where i struggle to decipher if I'm just losing interest in Football or if the Dolphins are pushing me away from it.
This past Sunday i did something that i have never done before. I turned a Miami Dolphins game off after the 3rd quarter and went to bed. Consider the fact that this was a prime time divisional game against the Jests and my story should put things into perspective.
Everything about this team bores me. The product on the field is pathetic. Top to bottom. I absolutely despise seeing Jason Taylor out there - and not because he went to play for New York, heck who am I to criticize someone for working for an organization where you are wanted. I hate seeing him because he sucks. Same with Carey and Colombo and Hartline and Misi and Incognito, etc. etc. etc.
I honestly try to avoid catching glimpses of Skinny Tony S. on the sidelines. The sight of his sunglasses, Dolphins cap and windbreaker annoy me to no end. Everything about that man (as a coach) sickens me. This off season he openly admitted that he was too conservative in the past and vowed to change it - yet he has shown no signs of progress this year. His press conferences are humiliatingly elementary. His inability to manage a game is dumbfounding. And his lack of cojones is - well after 4 years - to be expected.
I guess the point i'm trying to make here is that the NFL and the Miami Dolphins are losing a fan here. I'm sure that if we land Andrew Luck in '12 my love for the game will be reincarnated. However, i don't expect my stance on the state of football to change any. The reality is, this game is being transformed in front of our eyes by corporate greed and billionaires who want even more than what they already have.
