Miami Herald: Inconsistency is a Constant with Dolphins

yea, you can bet nobody would want to play us in the playoffs though (which we likely won't make anyway but hey)

I agree with some of his points. Mcmichael is overrated and Chambers is vastly overrated. Ive been saying that for years.

As for the whole team being inconsistant, I disagree at least from my point of view.

For the past two years, the team has started out terrible, then finished hot. Last year, we started out 3-7, then went 6-0. This year we started 1-6 and since then 5-1. Two years, same results- thats consistency.

It really makes less sense this year though (although it does to some degree).

Last year's team was scraps after key defensive free agents in the secondary up and left--for once, the offense was better than the defense.

Miami's 6 game win streak was against mediocre teams for the most part, and was largely due to good coaching and pure inspiration (I think without the Bills comeback, meaning either we won going away or lost, Miami would never have been sparked).

This year, however, Miami has beaten the Patriots, Bears, Chiefs, Vikings...after a 1-6 start, they've been 5-1. It's like, of course the offensive struggles early on were largely a part of the reason, but the defense also wasn't playing at this high a level either. And some of those losses....the TExans, for instance, were just so freaking AVOIDABLE.

Mare missing that field goal against the Jets, too...ugh.

to borrow JT's answer, that guy needs a hug and a hobby. When's the last time he wrote anything good about the Fins? Anyone know? I can't remember. If you looked over his articles of the last few years you'd think he was a Pats fan.
How about winning five of the last six, and beating some of the NFLs best teams in the process? That consistent enough? And I disagree 100% with his 'greatness makes consistency, consistency doesn't make greatness' philosophy. How many incredibly talented players aren't able to bring it every week and therefore never cross that threshhold to greatness? There are more talented tight ends than Tony Gonzalez, his greatness comes from the fact that he's talented and most importantly consistent. There are quarterbacks with better physical tools than Tom Brady, his greatness comes in his consistently playing at a high level. It's a mental thing more than anything else, and that's what Saban and his staff are working on. I would say the team, the whole team, has played five pretty good consistent football over the last six games.
We haven't made the playoffs in five years because three of those were when the team was in the process of being run into the ground by Wannstedt, and the last two have been a work in process. You don't take the mess Saban inherited and turn it into a contender overnight. I don't think any team in the NFL would want to play us right now.
If you want consistency, then look no further than Lebatard's record. He has consistently been the most miserable, negative, pessimistic sportwriter I have read. Does this make him a great writer?

I don't see why anybody would disagree with what he said.

The team has played consistent "now" but going 1-6 for one half of the season and 5-1 for the other is horribly inconsistent.

So much has gone into the problems this year: 1) new QB - then a switch to a new QB after Week 4; 2) new offensive co 3) new defensive co 4) new secondary
I don't know this team COULD be consistent week in, week out, through the first part of the season. But they've pulled it together now. Where credit needs to be given is to the coaching staff for adjusting, getting this new crew of people on the same page, and winning five of six. The up-down is part of the building process, and Saban has to know it. I think next year, things will be more stable, and that is the year to be more critical of inconsistencies in performance. When such an overhaul occurs, like this past off-season, we can't expect such a mesh. We won 6 straight to end the year, but we had so many changes(as I delineated earlier) that it wasn't the same team starting this season as won last season.
But Saban does need to start hitting some homeruns in the draft. Otherwise, we'll never get to the promised land.

Just another frame for a picture we've all seen painted this year,
this one bearing a darker stain, that casts a bleak distress over the entire piece
One that started out looking like a train wreck, but managed to switch tracks
and bring nearly every steaming locomotive it crossed tracks with,
to a screeching halt.

You can frame it any way you want, but I'd say its still a work in progress.

This part hurt the most:

"
This is part of why Miami is stuck in an uncommon place for such a winning franchise. It is a pretty awful group that hasn't made the playoffs since 2001. Dolphins. Lions. Cardinals. Saints. Bills. That's it. That's the entire list."

I notice Le Batard writing negative pieces after the Fins do something great...ie win vs Chicago, win vs Kansas City and last weeks game versus New England.

People forget that this league is so different from one week to the next.

I think that the difference for the Fins this year are maddening losses to Buffalo, Houston and Green Bay.

Give the Fins 2 of the 3 we are talking about you needs to win what and playoff positioning.

There is fine line in this league- especially in the AFC.

i dont think during that 1-6 run we were anything but consistent. we were consistently bad, and now we are consistently good.

being inconsistent would be playing horrible 1 game, and great the next. or even in 2 game stretches. but being horrible over 7 games, and then very good in 6 games wouldnt be inconsistent to me personally.

The part that really got me was:

In a league that legislates equality, mind you. And the Saints are getting off that list this season, with a quarterback Miami could have had and wanted to be here. So the Dolphins stand with the laughingstock Lions and Cardinals and the 6-7 team they play today in a grouping nobody wishes to be in.
I had forgotten we have been really that bad for this long...

I dont care if what he writes is completely true or not....LeBatard is a pompous jerk. It doesnt matter to me what he writes...everything he says irritates me. His show on 790theticket weekdays is a joke too. All he does is mock his guests and make a big deal about people like Chuck Norris. If you want to talk sports (legitimately)....dont tune into his lame show.

Is there anything more annoying than having to listen to someone who really thinks he's ALWAYS right??! I actually stopped listening to his show about a month ago. What a joke...
