In an age of quarterbacks checking down at the first hint of a pass rush and offenses using the short passing game popularized by the so-called West Coast offense and wide receivers piling up catches while averaging 12 to 14 yards per catch, Evans makes his bread downfield. And nobody knows it more than the Dolphins, whom Evans scorches twice a year to the tune of 22.2 yards per catch and one touchdown per game.
His 2008 numbers -- his 24 catches have him tied for 46th in the NFL, but his 21.7 yards per catch is No. 1 among the top 50 receivers -- belong back in the days when the Bills and the Dolphins knocked heads in the old American Football League.
''He's an excellent pattern runner, route runner,'' Dolphins defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni said about Lee.
`He double-moves a great deal, and he just flat-out can run by you. You have to make sure that you have position on him. You don't want to lose leverage on Lee Evans, and you want to make sure, if you can, you're in good position to make a play. Otherwise, you're going to give him a chance to make another big play.''
Exactly the kinds of plays in which Evans specializes.
