[intro]Edwin Pope, the longtime sports writer and columnist for The Miami Herald who has covered every Super Bowl, will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. Pope was ``the runaway winner'' when his peers in the Pro Football Writers Association voted this year for the Dick McCann Award, which honors a long and distinguished career covering the sport.[/intro]

Pope began working for free for the Athens Banner Herald in Georgia when he was 11. He started working for The Herald in 1956 and covered his first NFL game in 1964. He's one of only seven writers to cover every Super Bowl.

``I'd be happy if football went on 13 months a year,'' Pope said. ``I've been very lucky in the coaches I've had to deal with down here, and you have to be blessed to cover a guy like Dan Marino for 17 years.''

Pope won the Red Smith Memorial Award in 1987 and has been enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame, the National Sportscasters and Sportwriters Hall of Fame and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.
