If we would have traded Zach Thomas a fews ago we would have got some good compensation for him instead we hold on to him to the point where he loses all value and ends up leaving anyway. Ricky Williams is another who we could have gotten decent value for at one time but , now the farther and farther we get away from his two big seasons the more his value decreases , earlier teams may have been willing to gamble on him even last year Linehan was intrested in him not saying it was for much of a pick but still it would have been a pick. Lastly, Jason Taylor we still could possibly manage something decent for him this year but would have got even better a year or two ago although he looks to be another we hold onto till there is nothing left. My point is this team has been a longshot at best the last couple of seasons around here so why not get some really good value for these guys to bring in some quality rookies who will be around for a long time. Thomas, Taylor , and Williams were all outstanding players and could have brought some really solid value if we trade them a year or two earlier. Why are we hanging on to guys so long?

so your saying trade a player in their prime?
hindsight is always 20-20

Yes with the shape our team was in (no star QB,weak oline, few rookies waiting in the wings). If we had a solid core I could see hanging on to them. I agree hindsight is always 20-20 however it wasn't that hard to see that we had too many problems to be a serious contender. Anything is possible but just our Qb dilemma alone was enough to shoot us down.

This isn't Madden... if you're lucky enough to get a potential future hof player on your team, you don't trade him. Especially when he is the staple of your run defense, and the heart and soul of your team.

Not to mention there's never a guarentee that a draft pick that you acquire for a player will turn into a starter let alone a quality player.

IMO there is a time when a player is starting to hit the downswing(its gonna happen) and if you catch it at the right time (I'm talking about a year or two ago) you can get some value. What is the point of keeping a potential HOF when the rest of your team sucks and he isn't gonna be around to reap the benefits of the rebuilt team. I t also gives the player a chance to have a shot with a more complete team before they retire.

Come on Sleek. Going by your logic we may as well trade Carey now then. Hardly helps trading the Defensive leader when we needed him most. We cant as a team be seen to trade our best players away when we need them the most. Easier to trade players away when you can afford to.

I see where you are coming from. As it stands now, though, the offers for JT aren't good enough to move him, IMO. We should plan on going to camp & then into the regular season with him until the offer gets a heck of a lot better. If he flourishes under the new system and resembles the guy who won the DPY award, the pick should get better even if he's another year older. If his play slips in 2008, well, there are worse things for a franchise to do than let one of their best players ever retire a Dolphin.

If a player's play is declining though, no team would want him, they'd rather use their draft pick to take a rookie. Zach's play was never on the decline and this year was the first year he had real concussion problems.

The concussions were unfortunate and completely unforseeable.

Zach was a great player our team sucked we had alot of areas to address if he could have brought us some picks for the future it would have been worth it. Let's take this year for example with Taylor if we could get good value for him it would be worth it rather than have him play a year or two more on a rebuilding team and then he retire and we get nothing. Keeping a guy just to retire him does not make sense. Retiring guys who played for teams with crappy seasons is not desirable. Focusing on creating a complete team and making the playoffs or winning the Superbowl is.

Hey I think you are on to something. Maybe we can trade away any player that hits his prime, God imagine the draft picks. Wow. Like after we draft Long- when he hits his prime- bang- hes out of here. Im going out on a limb by saying we might sniff the playoffs in about 20 years doing that.

I dont know but that would be like the colts saying- dump manning now before his trade value declines. Yes hes 32 but that would be a good way for a GM to get lynched in indianapolis

I said one or two years ago not right after we draft them. I would say Thomas and Taylor are closer to the end of their career than the beginning. I also stated the condition of the team plays a factor and that if we didn't have so many problem areas and were a solid contender the last few seasons keeping them would be worth it.

Under that logic, after what season should we have traded Dan Marino for picks? :err:

Go figure- and at that time they were both younger than manning.

You keep your best players and you PRAY they retire a dolphin.

The more loyalty you show your players, the more loyalty they show and give you.
