Matthews doesn't have the reputation of Trojan teammates Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga, two other first-round linebackers coming out, but he is moving up draft boards. Matthews blew up at the combine, running a remarkable 4.67-second 40-yard dash. In fact, it may be the Houston Texans who end up waxing nostalgic and taking Matthews with the 15th pick. That may be a little high to grab a player who only has one season of collegiate starts on his resume. It was an impressive season, no doubt, as Matthews had nine sacks and was fourth on the team in tackles. Not bad for a guy who was a walk-on for the Trojans.

I think Matthews will definitely be under consideration at #25. In the USC games I have watched he looked good and I like the way he pursues RB's and the QB. I think he has more upside than Laurinaitis and his dad and Uncle played for about 19 years in the NFL so you have to feel this guy will have a long career. Is that Don Shula's son next to Bear Bryant in your sig?

That article quote is wrong. Clay had 9 TFL but only 4.5 sacks last season. Not a 1st rounder IMO.

Mathews is one player that i dont think i'll ever be on the bandwagon of until he proves otherwise at the NFL level. I just have major issues selecting players at ANY position in the first round that are one year guys. it's sometimes different at these great programs because they are always sitting behind other great players. And honestly i have only seen 2 USC games from last season. One was against Oregon St. and if i based off that single game i wouldnt take a single USC defender in the first round (obviously i'd watch all film if it were my decision, and i'm being pretty sarcastic). I just think Mathews is a high risk/high reward player... But really is there even such thing as a "sure thing" anymore? I dont know, but Mathews is just too risky for me in the first.

One Word :

Earth Q'WAKE !!!!

I'd like to have Clay Matthews, but not unless we trade down or he happens to fall to #44... Taking him at 25 would mean passing on better players, at greater need positions IMO. Besides, we just got Cameron Wake ! I'll take his insane production over whatever MAtthews managed in the Pac - 10 !

I still think if we take him he will play ILB.

keep in mind clay was 2nd team PAC TEN last year.cal's zack follett was named ahead of him. and that was the only post season recognition he got during his whole time at USC.

Thread title should be changed to "Miami may look to build pass rush out of HGH" after the recent steroid news about him...

Agreed again MrClean - Clay = One year hit

Isn't if funny watching the ups and downs of the opinions on these guys?
After the USC pro day, some folks are posting based on his workout that Clay should move up to the mid 1st at least and possibly be the 1st USC backer taken. Then a day or so later, a so far unsubstantiated internet rumor of a failed steroid test, and folks are behaving like it surely must be true and saying he should be off our draft board completely and will certainly fall out of the 1st round.

I never thought he was a 1st rounder to begin with, based on what he did at USC playing football, which really should be the primary criteria. He was just a 1 yr wonder, and as for someone being considered a 1st rounder based on that year, his 1 yr wasn't all that great anyway.
