I mean way too much "misses". David Bakhtiary ?? A PERFECT ZBS TACKLE DRAFTED IN 4TH RD BUT they PICKed DALLAS THOMAS ?? COMMON!!! I Know drafting isn't exact science but we're weaving too much and this is the biggest problem with this team. They get enamored with a player too much and it becomes like over "need". For example, John Jerry over Jimmy Graham. They coached Jerry at the pre-combine games. Same thing with our secondary, Miami play zone but they drafted Jamar Taylor a "man cover" guy over Logan Ryan a perfect "Zone cover" guy. God!! it is very frustrating to be a finfan nowadays.

Please allow me to share a little secret about Jeff Ireland's draft with you all. READY FOR IT?

HERE IT GOES...

...SINCE 2008, EVERY PLAYER THAT MIAMI HAS TRADED UP FOR HAS BEEN A BUST. LOOK IT UP. IT DOESN'T BODE WELL FOR DION JORDAN AND WILL DAVIS IF THE TREND CONTINUES. REMEMBER....

... A. J. EDDS ?
SHAWN MURPHY?

What gave it away? Seriously though...there are hits and misses with every team. Unfortunately, we seem to miss a lot more than we hit

The clear goal is draft players that will not only contribute but become solid NFL calibre players. Most college teams don't even have one of those but some do. For Miami to Draft 3 players from UF last year is laughable, Sturgis I was the only one with a legit chance and he struggled, not saying he won't rebound, just saying that he presented the best chance. The other thing that drives me nuts is the number of players that they draft from Montana and UTAH. Again, how many elite players have come out of those programs? A few years ago it was the Northeast and Maine.

Instead of taking players will a solid track record playing against top level talent they take players who have good stats but against players that could probably barely play Arena Football.

It's possible we're using different scouts. After all, we need guys looking out for an entirely different skill set for Joe Philbin and Coyle's teams.

In regards to Thomas, he can certainly contribute next year. I think he was drafted just for depth.

In regards to man/zone coverage guys...it's my understanding that if you can handle the harder skill, you can handle the lesser one. I've heard cornerbacks say this before. So if he could handle man coverage, he can get used to zone. It's not the other way around. Still, like you said, you've got a head start if the player is already used to the same scheme.

Teams that suffer year after year fall victim to bad drafting, have a revolving door in the front office, and don't have a franchise QB. What "we" are, I'm not sure. We'll know this year. Is Philbin having growing pains, or is he a bust? Is Ireland going to give Philbin the players he needs to be successful? Is Tannehill going to develop into a franchise QB? We all have our own opinion on those questions, but this is the season where it's going to be easier to see what the truth really is.

That's because he's always looking for acorns.

If you gave any of us the same number of years as Jeff Ireland, we'd probably be able to draft better. It's infuriating that he hits on the udfa picks and later rounds, and totally blows the top picks.

I think that I read where the scouts really really liked Jimmy Graham. Don't blame it on them. That one was blocked by Parcells, who set draft rule #176 (k) - Never, never, ever use higher than a 3rd round draft pick on a Tight End. When in doubt, always go cornfed O-lineman.
As the 10 Commandments are set in stone, so are the Bill Parcells Draft Rules for Dummies

couldn't agreed more...I've been saying this for years that the scouting dept needs a makeover.

You are quite right, I know not what this team is. Show me one "WEST COAST" RECEIVERS ON THIS TEAM. ONE ZBS OL. ONE ZONE COVER GUY. I DON'T KNOW "WHAT WE ARE."

Anyone watch Donald Butler LB for Chargers? Talk about an impact player. 3rd round pick in 2010. I can't recall the last 3rd round hit we have had. Yes every team has hits and misses. We consistently miss.

I'm positive we were taking Graham, Sean Payton mentioned something about it before our game this season all smug like he knew he stole Graham from us.

You know that's an excellent point "I don't know what this team is either",which means neither does the team IMO.

This team does need an identity.

Charles Clay - 4th round.

In today's day and age, with hundreds of thousands of draft guru's, we may not even need scouts. :)

Seriously, all of the top picks, save a few, are all agreed upon by everyone. It's mostly a Lot Of Luck.

Isn't this the round where we always take a "project" O-lineman to keep our O-line coaches happy?

Sadly, I had Bahktiari as one of the steals and wanted him instead of Dallas Thomas if we went OL. It was fairly obvious the kid was very talented and could even play some LT. It was very dejecting when we took Thomas over him ... we do it every freakin' year.

This scouting department is good at identifying DL, but most of the other positions are poor. It's frustrating seeing our mishaps. The selection of Koa Misi over Gronkowski whom I was super-psyched about was a real rough one. Trading down from a spot where I wanted and we could have had Earl Thomas to take Jared Odrick and Koa Misi instead hurt ... but to also pass over Gronkowski with the pick we gained from the trade down really ticked me off. How may years have we added FA OL and WR? How many years have we drafted poorly at OL and failed to draft a WR in rounds 1 or 2? How long has it been since we could call either area a strength?

Very frustrating.

For the record, my dream draft of the top 4 rounds atm would be:

1. (19) Taylor Lewan LT Michigan
2. (50) Zack Martin OG Notre Dame
3. (81) Jake Mewhort RT Ohio State
4. (134) James Hurst LT/LG North Carolina

That would give us 3 OT's and one G/RT and eventually 4 guys to flank Pouncey and coverage for the entire line. Then 1 veteran LT until these guys are healthy (and Hurst heals up). Eventually we could start an OL of:

LT: James Hurst
RT: Zack Martin
C: Mike Pouncey
RG: Jack Mewhort
RT: Taylor Lewan

Hurst will take a season to heal up, and if he isn't strong enough then go with LT: Lewan, LG: Hurst, C: Pouncey, RG: Martin, RT: Mewhort. Regardless, that would give us quality linemen all around regardless of whether we run a ZBS or Power Scheme.
