What type of offense did we run in Miami in the 2006? How did it differ from 2005? What are the main changes we might see in 2007? :dolphins:

2006 seemed to have no philosophy what so ever. We ran gadget plays when there was no reason for it and we passed the ball for over 30 yards maybe once a game. Our running game was nearly non existent and most of our offense was based on a mediocre passing game that consisted of throws from 0-10 yards.

2005 Our offense used the deep pass to open up the run and keep the defense true. It did rather well for having a journey man QB in Gus and even in most of the games we lost it came down to a final possesion.

I believe Cam Cameron will be able to take our offense much further than Linehan did with some time. I also believe it all starts with the QB and our questions at that position raises many eyebrows which leads me to believe Cam will do everything in his power to aquire Quinn this year in the draft. Ever since Dan left we have had nothing but mediocre QB's and if CC wants to solidify himself over the next few years we need a young guy in there at QB that gives the fans hope. If there is one thing Dolphins fans are it is loyal to the coaches and players. He needs to bring in a solid QB prospect and finally give us the fans what we've been longing for the last decade.

Excellent post!

as long as we dont consistanly call the 5 yard out to ronnie brown on 3rd and 15 im good with it, and no the screen to the flat on 3rd and 15 is a viable option either

I was confused a bit about the offense ran in Miami last year. Someone had pointed in the Turner /Shelmon thread that it was the West Coast Offense. I am not a football savy, but I do not believe the scheme we had last year offensively was anything nearly close to the WCO or the Air Coryell offense either.
If anything, it is more a washed out version of the offense Mularkey ran in Pittsburgh, minus the trick plays, and mostly turning to a more conventional drop-back passing game.
I do not think Miami has ever implemented the WCO offense. I think that when Turner was our OC, our offense turned a bit more to the Air Coryell offense, but our QBs, did not suffice, and he had to turn more to the running game, since we had Ricky Wiliams.

Our 2005 offense was Linehan's version of Air Coryell, 2006 was Mularky's joke of an offense with no given direction whatsoever except stupidity. Cam runs an Air Coryell type offense in the Norv turner type mold. Should see some dramatic improvements this year. At least with Cam we hopefully won't be calling 5 yard plays on 3rd and 15. We should see more downfield stuff in the 20-30 yard range passing game, more use of the tight end, more running from the I formation.

While I expect Cam to draft a QB for future development, Daunte should be back to 100% and fits the type passer Cam likes with his downfield accuracy. He is not the pocket passer Cam likes, but his downfield accuracy should make up for that. I have doubts Cam will trade up to get Quinn, but expect him to take him if Quinn falls to us at #9. JMHO.

Thanks. Did Turner and Cameron ever worked together?

Go over the top to grab a lead then run the clock. Similar to what Wanny tried without any success.

Remember Turners' offense with Aikman at the helm? Over the top to Irvin then run the clock with E.Smith.

I expect Cam's offense to very similar with alot more sizzle.

Not really. The difference is Cameron favors a faster uptempo, short passing game - not exactly Air Coryell. Here maybe you should read this article - it sounds more like Harrington is the type of passer Cam likes.

"Shea and Cameron both like the same style of offense, one that emphasizes short and medium- range passes. The only major difference is the terminology each uses with the offense. Shea and Cameron came away from their meeting confident that they could work together, according to two sources close to the situation."

Now you do realize Terry Shea is from KC where Harrington was highly regarded,.. and has implemented a West Coast style passing game. Which of our QB's have experience with that? Oh, and did you hear Cameron say, talking about our current QBs - everybody gets a clean slate. Including all of them.

Now if you're reading this, it does NOT sound like Cam Cameron is looking for a big downfield deep thrower, who also can scramble. It sounds more like he wants a fast, elusive QB who can throw the slants and medium outs.

I also believe reports the team is going for Brady Quinn. Cameron is going to run a fast hitting, explosive 2-back offense with Ronnie and Ricky splitting time in the backfield.

If we draft Quinn in the first round watch for all of south Florida to proclaim him as the next Dan Marino and then watch him as he buckles under the tremendous pressure. He didn't play well during the big games (pressure) you think he'll beable to perform in the big boy's league??

Look us to trade up to nab CJ and put Ricky Williams in there for some trade. Most likely the Browns. They'll get their runningback and at the same time Quinn could fall to them at Nine.

In 2006, it was just major confusion. 0 identity. We tried to put up a decent blend of run/short-pass/long-pass with Culpepper, but that fizzled, he got injured and couldn't complete any long plays anyways. Then Harrington came in, tried the passing game, decided to move to short passes, found some success, then tried to focus on getting Chambers involved, then seeing horrendous results, then tried out Lemon, and was left with little offensive identity.

2005, was just a mix of long passes to open up the run, though we ran a bit less than we wanted to. Chambers had a huge breakout season in the slot, which was a big reason. Also, Linehan, not Mularkey, was calling it and Gus gets it out faster than Daunte.

I think 2007, you will see short to medium passes with an occasional longball when the defense is asleep or in pressure situations, but don't expect an emphasis on getting the ball down deep unless necessary. When we're within 20-40 yards, Cameron will try one deep though. In the mix, you'd have an array of runs. Stretch runs, runs up the middle, RB dump-offs, misdirections, FB fakes and runs will probably be mixed around to give the D's fits. I'm hoping they bring that odd formation of lining two tackles together at the point of attack then either running it power-style there or a misdirection if the D gets wise. And expect a trick or gadget play once every few games.

But again, the OL play and what QB we start will determine what we do. If OL does well, we can go with a Cameron-style. If not, we really are forced to go short or rely on shotgun to keep out QB's upright. The best QB right now for Cameron is Brady Quinn. He can make those short to medium throws, can operate under a bad OL, and made Walker look like a decent back.

Other posters have put much more depth and detail into it than I can, so I'll add this:

We didn't have an offense in 2006 - that was the problem :(
