Oh man. The Rams better not cut this guy. It was potentially a media nightmare to begin with if they cut him. It will be ten times worse now if they cut him.

Rams defensive end Michael Sam is getting a reality show.

The Oprah Winfrey Network announced today that it is working with Sam on a reality TV project that will show his life as the first openly gay player in the NFL.

Zzzzzzzzzz. As if television couldn't get more boring.
Does anyone really watch reality TV shows?
I don't.

Whenever there is the opportunity to make money, someone will eventually jump on it. Hence why OJ Simpson almost had his own show before everyone who was not OJ figured it out would be a horrible ****ing idea.

Poor judgement on Sam's part. Granted, as a 7th round pick he probably wont make the team and hes trying to cash in while he has the spotlight, but he should have all his attention on the team. I have no problem with the young man trying to set himself up for life, nor do i think this will be all that distracting from learning the game, but perception can hurt football careers just as much as reality. Anyone remember Reggie Bush before he was traded to us? His on the field play left a lot of questions but he was also plagued by off the field drama concerning his relationship with a reality television idiot. Jeff Fisher has been as proactive and as inclusive as any coach in the league, and hes done an absolutely phenomenal job of building a cohesive team environment(something i believe Philbin has utterly failed at), but he will not hesitate to cut someone who he thinks doesnt have their focus on the team. I wouldnt be surprised if Sam finds himself in the same grey area as Tim Tebow. He will have to decide if he wants to be a football player or a media personality. Barring a few veterans at the end of their career(Chad Pennington, Ryan Clark, etc), the sport just doesnt allow for both.

Anyways, as far as the "they better not cut him" stuff, by far one of the most overblown things about this story. No matter what happens there will always be a vocal minority that freaks out about something. That cant be avoided even on non-hot button issues(need i link the "Devone Bess/WPA" thread?). As long as the Rams cut Sam for reasons related to football they will be fine. When Jason Collins came out people speculated that the NBA would be slammed if a team didnt sign him. It ended up being a total non-issue because almost everyone agreed it had to do with his age. This falls closer to that linebacker who was wrongfully sent to jail because of a psycho and was given a chance to play in the league by the Falcons: a feel good story that people root for but will understand if it just doesnt work out.

Could care less what happens to this guy at this point since he's not on our team but isn't a reality show the sure sign that your career is coming to an end ala Chad Ocho Stinko and Terrall Owens ?
Oprah is doing him no favor.

If he just wants to be a guy trying to make it in the NFL, why is the Oprah Winfrey Network planning on doing a documentary following him through mini camp, etc. .....yea, he doesn't want to be treated any different than the rest of the draftees

Definitely needed a 4th thread on this. It shows that there is certainly a market for a show like this

Kornheiser was saying tonight that one of the STL writers told him that the Rams were blindsided by this - Sam never mentioned this show to them until after they drafted him.

IMO, not that it would have mattered. Goodell has successfully diverted attention away from lenient, unequal treatment of a drug addled owner caught in the act of possession who unbelievably still was permitted to sit in their draft room and from the blowback of stonewalling requests to change an offensively-racist team name. But I guess if Darnell Dockett can get away with it, why shouldn't Dan Snider? :idk: And then there's Stan Kroenke who now also knows that he can go through a second charade by demanding unrealistic concessions from the city of StL on the upcoming lease, and when rejected, he has the $44million dollar shill's ultimate go-ahead to move it to LA where he's already bought land.

As far as this Cubic Zirconia equivalent of a historic Hallmark moment went, I've said all along, dishonesty and hidden agendi all around. No one involved played it straight (pardon the pun)
