Mike Gesicki is campaigning for Durham Smythe to get extended by Miami

I see a lot of extensions happening across the league.

Nothing on Gesicki yet

That's a tough sell since they signed Shaheen and drafted Hunter Long.
Meh, 4 TEs is not unrealistic, particularly when all but MG also play specials.

Smythe isn't going to command big $ on the open market, and he's a solid player.

I think that 4th spot is extra, for a draftee, or someone they want to give a shot to.

If they keep Smythe, then they need to get rid of Shaheen.

SNAP COUNTS this year
Smythe 312 offensive snaps, 128 special teams (20 rec on 26 tgts, 221 yards, 0 td)
Shaheen 217 offensive, 39 special teams (12 rec on 16 tgts, 110 yards, 0 td)

Shaheen makes 2.5 mil per year. Smythe is on rooke contract at 750k average.

If they cut Shaheen pre June 1st, Cap hit is 333k.

MG knows he's going to get paid if not by Miami then by someone. However, Smythe isn't guaranteed a pay day.
I think he's good enough to be on someones roster.

But the head scratcher is how they extended the guy from Chicago(Shaheen) before extending either MG or Smythe.

I would assume a lot depends on how they view Long.

We haven't seen him, so it's really hard to say, but I get the impression he would fit better in the role of a Shaheen, rather than Smythe.

He's by far the best blocking TE on the roster, so if you let him go, wouldn't you have to replace him with a proven mid tier FA anyway?

Roster mismanagement is unfortunate for this regime. There's no excuse for that kid not to have played a handful of games at this stage.
Have to agree with that.

I can't think of any valid reason that he doesn't get at least a minimal amount of actual game experience.
