BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Mike Pouncey annually gets put in a tough spot as the leader of the Miami Dolphins' offensive line. The two-time Pro Bowler is one of the top centers in the NFL, but every year his group has drastically underperformed.
After another 45 quarterback sacks allowed last season, Pouncey once again had to field questions about his much-maligned group. Pouncey and fellow Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert played well in 2015. But injuries to right tackle Ja'Wuan James and awful guard play greatly superseded two good individual performances.
Ryan Tannehill is the most sacked quarterback in the NFL since entering the league in 2012, which must change if Miami wants to turn around its 25th-ranked offense.
"It's kind of always on the offensive line it looks like," Pouncey said this week at the NFL owners meetings. "You got to go out there and you got to do your job for [Tannehill], because we know once that kid stay on his feet, he can be a special football player. So we're going to do a good job keeping him on his feet."
Pouncey said keeping Tannehill clean is a "big focus" of the offensive line this offseason. Miami averaged just 19.4 points per game last year, and a big reason was due to negative plays in the running and passing game that stalled drives.
Tannehill has been battered and beaten. To the quarterback's credit, he's never complained and still posted back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons. Tannehill said he took several weeks off to rest and recuperate his body and feels 100 percent again.
"I know we have to play better," Tannehill said. "I know that being healthy at the tackle position will definitely help improve our offensive line play and just being consistent. It was like 12 games [last year] with a backup offensive lineman in, and it's tough to be consistent and it's tough to play at a high level with that many games with backup linemen."

Certainly would like to see him with better protection than he has seen, especially over the last three seasons.

FU Pouncey, piss off so we can go out and actually acquire a real center.

Has he ever seen Ryan with good pass protection? It's as rare as seeing Bigfoot have sex with the Tooth Fairy.

I was watching nfl network this weekend and they were showing all of week 2 games from last season.. (mia/jax). about 2 or 3 mins left in a tie game and miami takes over at their own 7. 1st play, Jason Fox totally whiffs on tannehills blind side and he gets sacked (almost a safety but Fox pulled the ball out of the endzone.. Fox never TOUCHED the def end. Hell, I(at 185lbs) could have at least got in his way and got run over and slowed him down a little bit. sorry to relive this for everyone but it was ironic that i turned it on to see this play

yes, we all saw that play, tommyp. i'm sure you can find like 4 or 5 threads dedicated to that one play in the archive.

RT is not bad right now.

He can definitely be better.

No matter how you look at it he is above average.

I have not seen anything in the pros or in college to indicate that he will ever be a 'special' QB though.

He doesn't have to be 'special' to be a winning QB, or to progress into the playoffs.

That said, in the draft you draft the best player available.

If a better QB falls to us in next year's draft (2017) it will be very interesting to see what happens.

if he needs good protection.... doubt we ever find out :(

Humorous! Wrong, but humorous. He had good pass protection at least 1/3 of the time. That is not good enough, but the oline succeeded occaisionaly.

There have been times. When RT had a solid OL he was completing passes at NFL record breaking levels. RT will never be a top 3 or 5 QB, but I could care less. I'm looking for a QB helps to win games, not someone that turns the ball over to lose game. He has been more of the turn over guy to this point, but I think a lot of that can be explained away by the record bad OL he has played behind. With Albert and Pouncey hurt more often than not the last 2-years I think anyone that ignores that is simply pushing a personal agenda, and nothing more.

The oline was actually a little above average vs NE week 17 last year.

Great. A good OL is bound to have a bad game or two based on the quality of their opponent. But they also need to be consistently good and Miami never has.

1/3 of the time based on what?
