DAVIE — Jim Mora and Eric Mangini. Those are a couple of names being tossed around should the Dolphins conduct a coaching search at the end of this season.

At least, those are the names being tossed around publicly. Privately, one other name has been thrown in the mix if the Dolphins move on from Dan Campbell. And, it’s one that trumps all, even if it’s far too early to tell if either side is interested in going down this road.

Mike Shula, then coaching the Dolphins’ quarterbacks, directs Damon Huard during training camp in July 2000 in Davie.

Shula.
Not Don, of course, but Mike, for reasons beyond his surname. He’s the offensive coordinator on one of the highest-scoring teams in the NFL, and the only squad with a shot at joining his father’s 1972 Dolphins as the only ones in league history to go undefeated, the 12-0 Carolina Panthers.
Already, Mike has received an endorsement from at least one Dolphins great. Bob Kuechenberg, a guard on the undefeated team, said he called the offices of owner Stephen Ross and Don Shula to plant the seed.
“It’s screaming — screaming to be done,” Kuechenberg said.

Would certainly move the needle. Not sure if young people would care or even know.

I am not a Shula guy, but his work does need to be noticed. However, I would put Hue Jackson or Todd Haley's work well ahead of Shula.

It is going to be a weird situation for the FO that is for sure.

I will say this, no one will have more passion for this team than him

Just bring me a PROVEN offensive producing guy. If Shula were to come here and be successful it would be the feel good story of all time for our franchise, but for all I care it could be a guy named Bob Taylor.

Just bring someone of merit and not an already failed HC, a college coach or an OC. For God sakes get someone that is proven!!!!

The article should list the people that have ties to Tannenbaum. It will be longer than just Mangini and Mora. He was Hue Jackson's stinking agent for crying out loud. Same for Dirk Koetter.

The expectations for him her would be overwhelming and the shadow of his father would be too much to bear.

Plus, if he fails here, it might burn some bridges with Don and the franchise.

I wouldn't wish this mess on Mike Shula.

We need a guy with former NFL HC experience to try to sort this out.

I still think it'll be either Payton or Jackson at the end of the day, but I wouldn't rule out Shula if Tannenbaum isn't able to close the deal with the previous two.

I'd be all for MS but I'm afraid living up to the legacy that is his father would be way too much pressure on him, on top of everything else.

People said the exact same thing about Bob and Brian Griese. And Bob is still around. I highly doubt if Mike fails as a HC for the fins, that Don will hold a grudge against the dolphins, if they look elsewhere. As long as they give him a legitimate shot.

I think Campbell wins 2-3 more games and Ross/ Tannenbomb gives him another year with his choice of staff.

I'd take Mike Shula as head coach...as long as he brings the entire Carolina defense with him.

I'd be willing to give him a try. How awesome would it be if he were hired and lead us back to the top like his dad did.

No more first timers even if their name is Shula.

HC experience is a must. No more on the job training.
