DAVIE — Jim Mora and Eric Mangini. Those are a couple of names being tossed around should the Dolphins conduct a coaching search at the end of this season.
At least, those are the names being tossed around publicly. Privately, one other name has been thrown in the mix if the Dolphins move on from Dan Campbell. And, it’s one that trumps all, even if it’s far too early to tell if either side is interested in going down this road.
Mike Shula, then coaching the Dolphins’ quarterbacks, directs Damon Huard during training camp in July 2000 in Davie.
Shula.
Not Don, of course, but Mike, for reasons beyond his surname. He’s the offensive coordinator on one of the highest-scoring teams in the NFL, and the only squad with a shot at joining his father’s 1972 Dolphins as the only ones in league history to go undefeated, the 12-0 Carolina Panthers.
Already, Mike has received an endorsement from at least one Dolphins great. Bob Kuechenberg, a guard on the undefeated team, said he called the offices of owner Stephen Ross and Don Shula to plant the seed.
“It’s screaming — screaming to be done,” Kuechenberg said.
