Mike Wallace's Attitude

I bet he hated Sherman.

He did and he wasn't the only one. It got glossed over last year because of BullyGate, but right before Martin left the team it came out that Mike Wallace was furious with how Sherman was using him, and the offense as a whole did not like how Sherman was calling plays or how he was throwing them under the bus.

Now let's get one thing clear, while I was no fan of Sherman the OL really hindered him, but at the same his constant response of "The play was fine, our players just didn't execute" is not the right way to handle things in front of the cameras and microphones especially in the day of social media. Now in a lot of instances it may be true, but compare his attitude to Bill Lazor's where Lazor's response to a failed play is "We need to talk about why the play failed and what we have to do to fix it". Players appreciate that response more than Sherman constantly going "The play not working wasn't my fault"

I also remember Sherman praising Wallace saying he was having a great year (this was early), and when the reporters told Wallace about it he was almost speechless and basically said he was barely involved.

And Wallace was not the only one to bash him. Brian Hartline went on several radio shows as guests and while he was diplomatic, he did not hide his displeasure, agent David Canter continuously bashed Sherman (and Philbin and Ireland) on twitter, and both Darlington and Volin said that Sherman was not a very popular figure with the players or even some of his offensive staff (I guess how he treated both Clay and Egnew that was shown in an episode of Hard Knocks really bugged Dan Campbell)

A few things.....

People talking about the money making him play harder would be using the money as an excuse for why he wasn't playing harder if that's what the argument required.
"he got paid so now he's turned on cruise control."

The fact is we're running an offensive scheme that work better. He didn't like Sherman, and probably didn't like him calling for 5 deep balls a game when we weren't connecting with them. Now he gets the ball in the screen game, shallow crosses, in space and has a chance to make plays.

Yea he's overpaid but get over it that's what free agency is for marquee players. The people who were destroying Wallace last year should be eating crow as far as I'm concerned. He has come a long way as a team mate and hard nosed player. Making good catches and fighting for yards. Here here to Wallace being our #1.

17 million has a way of changing attitudes lol. I think he has been a better teammate and player this year also. Still not a fan of him for what he makes a year esp considering he is not a top 10 receiver but he seems to be a much better team player and has made some tough plays
Well he is 4th in TD's among WR's despite having a bye, which is important. I'm not saying he is top 10 at this point but if he continues on the same path he may be a top 10 at the end of the season.

Everything about him has changed this year! Scoring really well so far.

Money has nothing to do with how he is playing, money can't make you happy, it can only make you ok or unhappy. His greatly improved attitude is clearly to do with the offense and how Lazor is using him, get the ball to him early and often. Tannehill to me really is the last step to making the offense really potent, we have a decent oline, running backs are doing fine, receivers haven't been the best but that will come, we just need Tannehill to be consistently good.

Anyone else notice how Wallace's attitude has improved this year? He seems much more positive and excited about the team and his role in it than he did last year.

Last year he always seemed to have a puss on his face in interviews, but this year he seems much more upbeat. It's also showing on the field as he is running with a purpose and attacking the ball, something he really struggled with last year.

Mike Wallace's improved attitude was noted back during OTAs and mini-camp. He said he no longer felt like a rookie because now he knows the guys on the team and he likes what type of offense Lazor wants to run.

From Armando in July
“I know the guys, I know my coaches, I know the weight room. I’m not like a rookie again,” Wallace said. “I’m not like that. Last year I felt kind of like a rookie again, coming to a new environment and learning my new teammates, learning the surroundings.

“Now I feel comfortable. I love my teammates and coaches and I feel excited about making plays. As long as I keep a positive attitude about making plays, I think I’ll be all right.”

The attitude issue is a big deal. Wallace’s attitude wasn’t always the best last year. Although he never actually complained publicly, his frustration with game plans that didn’t utilize him much was obvious. Although he never said it, Tannehill’s inconsistent accuracy on deep passes bothered him.

Those frustrations only heightened the pressure Wallace felt about getting so much money and living up to his five-year, $60 million contract.
