What about Mike Zimmer?

Dolphins interviewed him before, and maybe it's time to take a second look.

If the same thing happens as last time, where Ireland stays and the coaches go, then we'll need a HC. Keep in mind, that Shula and JJ are examples of great HC's in Miami, who were assistant coaches on defense.

But I have a bad feeling that nothing much will happen, and most of our staff will stay. Philbin may fire Sherman though, to keep his own job, and there's been all that talk about Tannehill not having faith in Sherman anymore.

You could do a lot worse than Zimmer. We need a leader of men in the head coach's office. Zimmer seems like a good leader.
 
Would any NFL coach worth his salt really want to work with the egotistical, back stabbing POS Irish potato head. Ross was spurned by any one good before and was left with Philbin.

Ross needs to get rid of Ireland, try to find a good replacement GM and then go after a real head coach.

Zimmer is an option but he is going to have a lot of suitors for his services.
 
I'd be for Zimmer...just pick a good OC, QB Coach, and OL Coach.
 
I just think they already had there shot at him. If I recall the comments were Zimmer was very rough around the edges etc guess he hasn't perfected the coach speak ie say nothing of substance. He could end up being a head coach someplace but don't see it in Miami. Maybe I am wrong and both sides reconsider.
 
I am still pissed that they did not hire Zimmer when they had the chance. Cincinnati's defense will run through a wall for that man. Pacman Jones' career was resurrected under him. That is exactly why Ireland has to go. Forget about draft pick and free agency screw ups. His coach choices stink too. Sparano was moron, and Philbin just does not appear to be able to get the best out of his players and he put together a crappy coaching staff. (Zak Taylor knows nothing about playing quarterback. Why is he a quarterback coach? and I will not waste anymore time talking about Sherman.)
 
Get a new gm first, then let that gm to hire his HC.
 
Doesn't Ross understand that NO top coach will come to Miami with Ireland as the GM. When NFL people are baffled why we still have Ireland as a GM that speaks volumes.
 
Wannstedt, Saban, Cameron, Sparano, Philbin. Seriously. We got rid of the first 4 on this list. None of them ever made another mark in the NFL. Never got another head coaching position in the NFL. Granted, Saban is back in college where he gets to deal with teenagers.

My point is that we should have no regrets about getting rid of any of them. And we won't have any regrets about getting rid of Philbin. He won't get another shot as a head coach after we fire him.

Get rid of Ireland, and get rid of Philbin.
 
A new GM, Zimmer as HC and young Gruden as OC. Give Coyle another year with a better LB core.

I agree with everything you said, and I'm really soured on Philbin. Philbin has a lot of control and influence, and the result of that is disaster. I know that there's a fine line sometimes between disaster and success in this league, and in year 3 we could be deep in the playoffs with just minor changes to staff and roster. But...as you said, Philbin does not show any ability to motivate his players, he's not a leader, and he seems most comfortable in a back office somewhere with a pencil in his hand, not working with football players. He hired Zak, he hired Sherman, and he delegates instead of getting right in there. Horrible.

He was recently hired by the Vikings. This is some of what he said in his press conference:


“I’ve got a chip on my shoulder,” the former Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator said. “I want to make sure that 31 other teams know that I’m here and I’m ready to coach this football team.

And about his relationship to players:

Zimmer plans to establish relationships with his players the way he did in Cincinnati. He said he wasn’t “buddy-buddy” with the players, didn’t take them out to dinner or have their cellphone numbers, but simply earned their respect as a leader.

“I want to grab these players’ hearts and get them to follow me,” he said.

What if something doesn't go according to plan and the players get confused and discouraged and want to quit? What would Zimmer do?

What about the scheme, what if the players won't do well in the scheme you're bringing in?

Zimmer said he just wants the scheme to fit his personnel while bringing the same aggressive approach as the Bengals defense last season.

Now, I know we didn't fire everybody and didn't go the new GM/Coach route, but this is somebody I mentioned before who would have been available to us, if we cleaned house. And others would have been available, and it would have also deepened the candidate pool for GM as well.

Ross is dragging his feet with this GM search. But in the end, he'd better get it right. Hopefully we've made the right choices.
 
The Zimmer boat sailed a long time ago so I don't understand the purpose of reviving this thread?

A lot of teams passed on him for years as a head coach so we will see if the Viking have hit it right.

Well, the purpose was to say that an assistant coach I happen to like, at a time many of us were hoping Miami would clean house, was plucked out of the Bengals organization and made HC. I read his press conference quotes for the first time yesterday and was struck by them, and how different some of his comments were than Joe Philbin's. That's why I put them up there.

As far as what boat has sailed, I think a lot more than the Zimmer boat has sailed,...given the fact that we retained our HC. This eliminated not only other HC candidates, but restricted the OC candidates (those that are WCO-style) and GM candidates (those that like Philbin and his system).

I wouldn't worry that much about the Vikings hitting it right with Mike and Norv, I'm sure they'll be fine. I'd worry if Steve Ross is hitting it right.
