Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel expects Packers to use tag on Flynn now

If Manning retires or stays with the Colts GB may just have enough leverage to pry a decent pick from someone.

And if they franchise him, they can't franchise a certain TE, can they?

It wouldn't be a huge gamble if they already have a trade worked out under the table. It's against the rules but we all know there are ways around the rules. I think it's very realistic that GB could have the ground work laid for a trade to either us or Seahawks or possibly even another team but the Seahawks and us have intimate knowledge about Flynn more than the avg team. What i'm saying is there is no gamble for GB if they all but have a trade already in place before franchising him.

nothing against weeden i think he's a solid top 50-75 value but its gonna likely have to be a gm and head coach but primarily gm on very firm ground in the near future that pulls the trigger on weeden in the top 40 picks

Can you say "Roger Staubach"? I'll bet that IRELAND can, seeing as how he came to us from the DALLAS COWBOYS, who weren't meek, piss-in-their-pants fools regarding picking up a 28 year old QB.

What if FLYNN HIMSELF signs the "franchise" offer? Is GB stuck w/him for a year at $14,000,000????? And...How do they explain that $$$ to ROGERS? And what do they do next year?
 
... and if Flynn turns out to be AJ Feely part 2, then we're all screwed. Honestly, i like Moore enough to confidently put him in as starter and draft Tannenhill/ Weeden/ Foles, and see where that gets us this season. The thing i wouldn't do is give a #1 OR multiple 2nd and/or 3rd rnd picks away for a QB with limited success at the position, a la AJ Feely. With Sparano gone, we're already better off than we were last season.
 
I would be shocked if Thompson tagged Flynn. That would put a serious hurt on that franchise if it backfires and it may very well do that. If he does, as much as I think Flynn is the best option he isn't worth 14 mil and a draft pick. I'd rather go Manning and Tannehill or Moore and Tannehill. Assuming that doesn't work then Weeden is my choice.

Well-said. And what about FLYNN, himself??? Can he sign the franchise offer or contract or whatever the he** it is, and sit on GB's bench for a year and be in the same advantageous position NEXT preseason?
 
Can't believe Jermichael Finley took a 2 year deal. The Pack could tag him but I still think they let him walk since the tag for a qb pays around 15 mil. That would eat up almost all their cap space for this season.

The Packers had about $7.9 million under a projected $120.4 million salary cap BEFORE they re-signed Finley. They've got a maximum of about $2 million under the cap left after signing Finley. The franchise tag costs $14.5 million. They have to clear $12-13 million in salary cap space just to apply the tag. And keep in mind to do a sign and trade, even if it's for a very brief moment, that salary counts and the Packers would be severely penalized if they went over the salary cap. So no matter what, if they're going to do this, they have to clear the cap room for it.

And what happens if teams call their bluff? The moment they offer Flynn the franchise tender he could sign it and then that $14.5 million is GUARANTEED. They'd have to clear another $5 million just to sign their draft picks.

I just don't see all that happening.

At WORST what would be happening would be a handshake agreement between the Packers and Dolphins that the Dolphins will not delay and will send over some low amount of compensation for Flynn immediately upon signing the tender. The Packers would have to clear the aforementioned $12-13 million under the cap, but because Miami would be trading for him right away, they wouldn't have to clear the additional $5 million for draft picks, and then when Miami trades for him sooner rather than later they can turn around and use the $14.5 million to do some damage in free agency.

Why would Miami do this? If the compensation agreed upon is low enough, they'd be doing it simply because they fear what Flynn will get on the open market. They'd do it because they would rather be the lone negotiators with Flynn, than to take the chance that a bidding war erupts and Flynn ends up with even more money than Cassel/Kolb got.

It COULD happen...but personally, I don't see it happening.

Would GB have to open up the cap space if they traded him on the first day of free agency, or even early in the week. IF I recall don't they have till the end of the week to clear cap space or am I wrong on that?

Hypothetical, Couldn't all parties be in on it. Otherwords Flynn agrees not to sign the franchise tag until the day of the trade thus GB would not have to clear up the space. Miami or whoever trades for him than re-signs him to a long term deal days later after the trade is done and everybody gets what they want. Is this a realistic possibility?
 
I just don't see GB willing to give up a guy for nothing when they know he is going to be paid 60 mill range and become a teams starting qb because they took the time to develop him over the past 4 years. I feel there is a real possibility they will have a trade worked out with some team with the Seahawks and us on the top of the list before FA even starts.
