Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel expects Packers to use tag on Flynn now

Tagging Flynn is a huge salary cap risk for the Pack. If they are doing it simply to try to get maybe a 2 for him, why bother? they can simply let him walk, get the contract he wants and next year get a 3rd comp pick for him WITHOUT the salary cap risk.

if he is tagged, then I believe the Pack already has a deal for a 2 from someone else.

the other issue the Pack faces with the tag is Flynn signing it and then refusing to work out a long-term deal with any trade partner much like Orton last year with us. Once the tag is placed, Flynn can still control where he goes by refusing to work out a long term deal.

Is all that risk worth it for the Pack to try to get a 2 when a 3 next year is almost guaranteed by letting him walk?

if he is tagged, noone will pick him up. It'll fun to watch a backup getting paid 20+ mill to ride the bench. and losing a great TE. Moore could use Finley!!!

unless i'm mistaken or something changed in this new cba the comp the pack would get if they let him hit free agency would be where he was drafted...7th round if anything

but i may be wrong on that and if so someone clue me in...

Wells does not count against their current cap. So many people keep making the point that if they "let him walk" it makes cap room. He already is not counting against the cap. FA's don't count against the 2012 cap.

ok so that $4 mil or whatever number ck pointed to for the pack being under the cap is already taking into account the fact that wells money is no longer on the books...how bout driver is he ufa and already off the books also???

Comp picks are never guranteed tho. If Flynn goes somewhere and plays like *** then the packers dont get anything..Also they have sign less free agents then they lose to even get consideration... A 2nd round pick is a high pick for an unproven qb. Teams covet draft picks..Its in Flynn's best interest to work out the best deal long term of course, but the Packers still have leverage. They tell Flynns camp these are the teams we will trade you to..Pick one..

I see Flynn heading to Washington now. I think Shanahan will pony up the pick. The size of Flynn contract would create more problems with the Fins salary cap. IMHO, this changes the game and we leaning toward drafting a player at this point.
With the announcement of the release of Henne, maybe the Packers felt that the Fins were now a sure trading partner / player for Flynn.
They planned to get something for him all along. That is what smart GM's do.

There was a thread recently asking what are the chances that Moore start this season. I said there were a couple of scenarios.
This is one of them.
Manning = probably damaged, Flynn = high cost/picks, Draft pick = Moore starts.
I think we will look at other low cost FA QB's as a back up to Moore. Campbell for example.
We will draft a rookie QB to groom. This will not be an overnight cure. The guy will need some time to get up to speed, probably 3/3 years.

Another crazy option. What if the Fins decide to trade away their 1st round pick this year for a teams 1st next year and some 2nd or 3rd round picks this year. By having 2 1st round picks next year, we can get into position to make a run at Barkley.

Well Hey if the pack can Franchise flynn. I hope we can franchise Paul and trade him for something..

OK, but what about the other side of the coin? What about Flynn's contract?

I would think he'd want the $14.5 Million for the year ... then want a monster contract the next year. This assumes he thinks he'd do well, & all QBs think that.

For Flynn to accept a NEW contract ... while staring at a guaranteed $14.5 Million this year & a possibility/gamble of signing a NEW Contract the following year with a mega-bonus of $20++ Million the following year ... a team would have to give him a monster offer (& give up draft pick compensation too.)

Who-weeee, for Flnn to pass that money/opportunity up, he'd have to get a MEGA-Contract to replace that with ALOT of GUARANTEED money.

Sure looks like Flynn is in the drivers seat ... not the Packers or any team who wants him & takes on huge salary cap money for a gamble.

Maybe I'm missing something????
Or Flynn can do what you said and sign his Franchise tag tender and play on a 1 year deal. Then what happens when he has a Kevin Kolb like year and next year he's searching for a backup job and misses out on that long term deal? He needs to strike while the iron is hot and get his long term deal

Jason Cole was on the Sedano show this morning and he mentioned a 3rd rounder is more than likely the compensation the Pack are going to want for Flynn , I'd do it in a second!

Makes sense..as I said Cassel was better than Flynn and they have similar measurables....Cassel played tho..

No to giving away any picks, take best plater at 8/9 and Grab Weeden in 2nd. At least we know that guy can play and keeps us going for a few years until we can get another.

So you're saying to give Flynn $30+ million guaranteed AND give up a high draft pick to Green Bay? To a guy with 2 starts?

Pretty huge gamble that would cost so much cap money, it would cut out signing 2-3 high caliber free-agents to plug other holes over a few years.

IMHO, I'd take the gamble (we need a QB so bad), IF Flynn can be had for free OR a low/mid round pick ... I'd pay him for the year ... see how he does, then sign him to the contract he deserves next year. TROUBLE IS ... some other team may take that gamble & pay him $30+ million guaranteed.

I'd also draft a QB (or 2) & sign a couple more non-drafted QBs ... the odds are long, but they're out there.

St. Louis was in this exact same predicament in the 1990s, QB Tony Banks got Rich Brooks fired (stuck with him like Sparano did with Henne) ... Dick Vermeil came in & looked at tons of QBs & ended up with several good ones ... Trent Green, Kurt Warner, Marc Bulger ... they even had Ryan Fitzpatrick & let him go ... and several other decent backups that never made it big.
