Minicamp Impressions

If I am reading this right, this would help quash the concerns about Boston's speed and hopefully signal his battle with "shin splints" is not one to truly be concerned with. It appears a good dose of conditioning and lower body strength training will have him back to (near) top form before preseason.

A healthy Boston gives Chambers the flexibility to move around the field in 3 WR sets. I'm simply salivating at this WR core.

Right after that play I didn't see Boston on the field again. He saw limited action but he looks very fast for a guy his size. My guess is they just don't want to overdo it w/ him

Yeah, give Boston about 2 plays per practice, and then play him sparingly during the season. This way we can have him all year. I am really hoping he can play the full year, and do really well, but I just don't want to get too excited about him. He has let me down, and others down too many times.

Hey Guys...I have been reading mini camp reports for years on this site and I finally got to go to a couple ( Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon ). Just wanted to share all the info I could because I love it when guys post what they know...

Here Goes...

Ronnie Brown - silky smooth out of the backfield and great hands. At the two practices I was at they didn't really run the ball at all and the offense was on the far side of the field so it was hard to see. Whoever posted that Lamar Gordon looks better than Ronnie Brown...I didn't see that at all. Ronnie Brown looks like he will atleast be very effective catching the ball. They ran several formations where they split Ronnie wide.

Vernon Carey - Is this the same guy that couldn't crack the lineup last year? I specifically focused on Vernon when I got the chance and he held his own against Jason Taylor. He doesn't look that comfortable out there but he looks like his pass blocking skills are atleast as good as Mcintosh. And he supposedly a mauler in the run game. This was probably the single best thing I saw in the two practices I went to.

Chris Chambers, Marty Booker, David Boston, Randy MC - If this isn't the strength of our team it ranks near the top. You can see the talent in all of these guys. They ran one formation with All 4 of those guys and Ronnie Brown lined up at receiver they dumped the ball to Boston on a crossing route and he looked like an Olympic sprinter w/ the ball. Very impressive buy he its mini camp

Junior Seau - looks like he has another year in him to me.

Zack Thomas - Mr. consistency.

Channing Crowder - This guy is huge and fast.

Travis Daniels - He lined up w/ the Starters and looks like he is very comfortable technique wise

Rex Hadnot - lined up at guard not center.

Math Roth - very big and appears strong...I saw him bull rush some big guys out there.

Sam Madison - clearly the best we have at CB...if he gets hurt we are in trouble.

Keith Traylor - he must do his offseason workout at Golden Corral. He is huge.

Larry Chester - he jogged on the eliptical trainer for 30 minutes the two days I was there. Reports of his demise appear premature.

Nick Saban - very efficient practices...his coaching staff is very energetic.

Kevin Carter - very big ... it is tough to tell the talent at DT at a mini camp.

Alphonso Roundtree - He had a horrible practice on Saturday.

AJ Feeley & Gus Frerotte - unfortunately not much difference here. AJ looks shaky in the pocket when there is pressure but throws a pretty pass. Gus looks Calm in the pocket but consistently overthrew receivers..

Brock Berlin - thanks for coming out.

Overall absolutely meaning less impressions of our team after two practices..

We are stacked at receiver and Dline. If we get another year out of Seau and Saban puts Crowder at outside LB we are stacked there too. We have a nice front 7. Sam Madision looked good to me and Travis Daniels looked good too. Our secondary is weaker than last year. If Ricky Williams comes back we are stacked at RB. QB is average at best. Oline looks better. We can be competitive this year.

That is about all I can think of guys....This is probably repetitive of what you have already read...I have not had time to read the posts.

One interesting tidbit though. I went to South Beach on Sunday and went to Wet Willies. The entire ( 20-25 ) guys on the team were there. Zack, JT, Kevin Carter, Keith Traylor, Tebucky Jones, Math Roth, Ronnie Brown, Randy Mc, Channing Crowder, Travis Daniels, Josh Shaw. I was in shock. Kevin Carter seemed very nice and very intelligent. Some of the guys were catching pretty good buzzes. Hopefully they didn't drive home...

Yeah, you are right about Kevin Carter. He's extremely nice and intelligent. My company had him come in and sign autographs for our customers when he played for the Rams here in St. Louis. He's a real classy guy.

I tend to think we should take it slow and absorb the "Ricky thang" and look for Rookies and 2nd year guys to step up and provide some spark. Otherwise, with Sabans demeanor, I think we will slowly ease into training camp and when the pads come on, the fun begins. AJ Feeley is going to have the house thrown at him and the world is gonna say how bad we are, but really, we should be awesome on D if the DB's stay healthy, and we will prob pick up a player or two as time goes on.

anybody that went to these camps....Did Kay-Jay impress you at all?

This is purely my opinion based on limited evidence. I only saw Kay-Jay run the ball a couple of times, he looks like he has enough talent to play in this league but didn't look any better ( or really any worse ) than Lamar Gordon and Sammy Morris. I think he is one of the guys that won't be able to shine until the pads come on. He really did not get that many carries because they have to split them between so many backs. My guess is that when the pads come on Travis Minor and Sammy Morris will fall to the back of the pack, with Lamar, Ronnie, Kay-Jay, and that guy named Ricky getting the nod. Sammy will probably make the team because of his versatility and special teams ability. Depending on how many backs they keep it is gonna be tough to make this squad.

Thanks for the info. Agree are too many Brown "a wasted pick" threads. I think he was an excellent. Optimistic about season, looks like will depend on QB, OL and secondary.
