Almost every move our new "brain trust" Grier and Flores have given us are moves I'm completely on board with, with one glaring exception. In April 2018 we drafted Minkah 10th overall, and in June we signed McCain to a $27 million contract. At the time, I was on board with both. McCain was a top 10 (top 5?) nickle CB, and Minkah was thought to have been a lock at FS, with the added ability to play other roles from time to time, aiding in disguising our defense.

Due to injuries, and a condition known as "Burkeitis", that combo never seemed to happen last year. From everything we've seen this year at TC and through preseason, it wont be happening this year either. I just dont get it. I realize nickle corner is more important role than it used to be, but it seems like a huge allocation of capital (both money and draft) for one position. Is Minkah THAT BAD at FS? Is Minkah THAT MUCH BETTER at slot corner, to the point where it makes more sense to put McCain at FS, where he seems to be heavily mis-cast?

Some will say it makes sense to play Mikah in the slot, where he excelled in college. If that's the case, why re-sign McCain? We still had him for another year. We could've used that money to sign a real FS.

Honestly the only thing that makes a bit of sense is that McCain is at FS to ensure the tank, which sounds pretty sketchy, but who knows. Regardless, this whole mess makes me wonder what exactly our "brain trust" is thinking.

you need to give the staff a little time to figure out where he helps the team the most … the 'surprises' at LB may have changed the calculus of the DBs … clearly, they had no expectation (may be little from Baker) from them.

if there is good news story from camp … it IS our LBs … which parlays to the DBs …. some will vote WRs, but hasn't shown itself thus far since the pads came on … we'll see further down the road.

lastly, I still do NOT want to see Rosen start til after the bye … all for sitting him the first few games, letting them figure out the OL and let FITZ get hammered ….

Minkah is going to be used in multiple roles. It's difficult to do that from a "base" FS position, do to presnap alignment depth. Even if you did use him in the "multiples" philosophy from the FS position, you would still need to cover that spot.

If you are for MF being the full time FS, that's fine, and it makes a lot if sense, but not in this defensive scheme. Minkah is a rare talent. Not everyone can play the variety of asks that he is able to.

What you are really saying is you dont like the philosophy. That's fine, but I wish ppl would just say that.

I don't like that philosophy......jk......lol
Actually, I can understand if ppl don't. It isn't exactly a mainstream approach, and outside of NE, it hasn't been all that successful.

At this point though, it is what it is for the foreseeable future. If it proves to be a disaster like our "wide nine", there will be good reason for complaining.

My opinion is let's give it a chance, before we condemn it.

I think too much emphasis gets placed on position titles anyways.

Miami drafted Minkah to be the brain of the defense and be that "Rover" that just can excel at many things.

I think people want an Ed Reed type of Center fielder at FS but Minkah is not that, he can do so much more with his skillset and is better suited to be in a position where he can have the play in front of him, he can diagnose and he can react. He can do that from the FS position but honestly in today's game you want him to do it from the nickel because he is closer to the LOS and 80+ percent of the plays are going to be run inside that 10 yard box from the LOS to the first down marker.

The game has evolved so much that Miami's base defense is essentially the nickel and that justifies a selection of a player like Minkah IMO.

McCain was given his contract before Minkah was drafted, both are really slot CB's McCain is good and Minkah looks elite, both cover well and tackle well so it's it's not a bad problem to have.

Dolphins look like they will have to live with McCain at FS this year, hopefully we draft or pick up a better one and McCain will probably have to take a pay cut and come off the bench or get traded.

Actually we drafted Minkah and extended Bobby later on.

We extended Bobby to be a slot CB and Minkah was always drafted to be a "chess piece".

I have no problem with that.

Problem was we had this idea that either Reshad or TJ, made for a competent FS . . .and that never made sense. They are both box safeties and by default Minkah is your best FS option, your best boundary CB opposite of X and your best nickel.

Everything would be decent had we not extended Reshad and moved on with Mcdonald at SS. That mistake was brutal.

Miami wants him inside but he, in interviews, is asking to be put outside. He wants to be a corner but he doesn't have the skills necessary to do that. He doesn't want to be a FS. He is a good player, not great, he is smart and athletic enough.

I don't remember it that way, but I'm getting old, thought we extended McCain in the off season before the draft and we didn't really think Minkah would slide to us and he did, some had Minkah as a top 5 pick.

Neither are safeties both lean towards CB IMO but theres a lot you can do with both

Not saying you're wrong, but where did he say this? I thought his issue was with playing SS when Jones/McDonald were out. Might be wrong, but I thought that was the issue that got his mom talking.

They signed Bobby McCain to an extension in June of 2018. So it was after they drafted Minkah that year.

Minkah was the 11th overall pick.

But Josh Rosen was 10th!

Now we have them both!
