NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -Tulsa Drillers coach Mike Coolbaugh died after being struck in the head by a line drive as he stood in the first-base coach's box during a game.
The Texas League game was suspended in the ninth inning Sunday after the 35-year-old former major leaguer was hit by a foul ball off the bat of Tino Sanchez of the Arkansas Travelers. Coolbaugh was taken to Baptist Medical Center-North Little Rock, where he was pronounced dead.

Thats horrible. Only 35, 2 young kids with one on the way.

RIP

This is really sad....he was part of the Rockie's franchise here in Colorado. :(

I don't know what more a 1st or 3rd base coach could do as the ball gets there so fast. Other than maybe moving these guys about 20 feet further down the line, but than this would make it rather useless to have these guys on the field. You always have to keep focused on where the ball is at, but sometimes you will still have these freak accidents. This reminds me of that
girl who got killed by a hockey puck at the Columbus game a few years ago.

Just a terrible accident and story. I feel bad for both the guy's family and also the kid that hit the ball.

This is such a sad and scary story...I mean we all know that getting hit with a 90+mph baseball in the head is deadly, but this really makes it all the more clear...

R.I.P.

Holy crap. This is one of those freak incidents that are just tragic for everyone involved. Condolences and prayers to the family and the poor guy who hit that ball.

Hopefully helmets will become standard attire for those along the sidelines.

I don't think so. It was a terrible accident but just a freak thing. I mean baseball has been around for over 100 years and this is the first time something like this has happened. Just a terrible freak thing but I don't think baseball needs to change any rules because of this.

Sad news. Travelers are the Angels AA team I'm sure Sanchez will have a hard time getting over this accident.

If teams will ban alcohol from clubhouses thanks to the irrationality of a single Cardinals pitcher (who didn't even drink in the clubhouse), it's not beyond reason to believe that officials standing on the sidelines of a baseball game might begin to wear something more protective than a cloth cap.

Even so, I could see them making it a rule now. Just on the safe side. I'd be all for it

And this is why even when i used to umpire little league in HS I wore a batting helmet even in the field. Terrible story.

And ESPN news just said it was only because his kids wanted him to coach that he went back to doing so a month ago.
