Misi in the Middle?

I'm fine with Misi at MLB on 1st and 2nd down, but I'm curious if he is staying on the field during the nickle package....

NO, he will not be on the field on 3rd unless it's under 3 yards. Misi is an average LB vs run, but vs the pass he is horrible. That is why he wasn't on the field last year on 3rd. He is very much a one trick pony. ZERO pass rush ability and below average in coverage.

i'm not much of a fan of this cause if teams decide to go fast and not let us substitute the mike backer is gonna wear a target in coverage on 3rd down...teams will do us a favor is they sub out personnel and let us sub in our sub package...problem i see here also is like last year i expect teams to go after us in the nickle on first and 2nd down even (they did it last year to take solia off the field) and expose our dts with doubles etc we will get that again this year but it will also be about exposing the mike backer in coverage...

it should help the inside and off tackle run defense i don't think it will help the wide stuff all that much nor do i expect to see misi shooting gaps into the backfield very often off a read and dx one step ahead of the offense it's just not what i think his game is...that and teams will go after him with misdirection and play action when he overpursues and takes the bait...i would think the flood gates would be open for all the action one way and rolling out a backside tight end all the opposite way for wide open easy chunk yardage looks...you can bet misis gonna get caught being overly aggressive at mike to try and get to some things

you can't just zone drop and flats cover your mike backer he's gonna have to carry coverage...

Thanks captain obvious, but I was just reiterating what I read, not what I thought about Misi's abilities. I don't think you need to explain to anyone that Misi shouldn't be covering a slot guy on 3rd and long.

I am an unabashed fan of Koa Misi and I'm surprised that he is preparing to play the mike role. He is big and physical and will give it his best shot, but it is a different position to learn and I would expect him to make his share of mistakes. I also hope that his reactions are fast enough to pick it up. A risk averse player would not be in there trying, the safe thing was just to hold his old position. Full marks for great attitude. If he can play the position well, it will be very big for our Defense, because our D-line and DBs are both solid.

yeah i saw that also prior...and it doesnt work for me...misi has played coming forward throughout college they found a way to salvage his career in our d as a strong side olb where he could cover flats and zone drops and RARELY carry coverage...and when he did it was usually a slug tight end or a fullback...it won't be anything like that at mike...he will be exposed

if this works i will be surprised...scheme will have to really hide him in coverage...this team needs a legit mike backer something fierce then misi can play where we'd get the most bang for our buck anyways and be a strength not a liability....2 down strong side olb that can provide some limited rush capabilities on 3rd down

i get the need to change some things up but this isn't how i would go about it...i guess after they struck out in the draft early to find a mike though it's plan b...if i'm an oc i'm licking my chops about getting misi on a major mismatch in coverage

Totally agree - Mike in a 4-3 is not some 6'3" 260 lb guy barreling downhill on every play. It's a 6'1" 230 guy who's quick, reactive and can pedal/cover/shed/fill at a moment's notice.

I read Coyle's quotes on Misi to be pretty cautious, basically that the early returns are fine but that's it is still too early to tell. Let's face it, Ellerbe didn't work out out at mike last year, and the team offered the Jackson castoff kid from Cleveland who ended up in Indy. So, something needs to be done. I am definitely concerned about the run defense.

Philbin loves Misi. You can find all of Philbin's quotes on Misi and he gushes about him and then see how Miami paid him with the contract extension. Misi's progression as a player has been pretty good. A few years ago, some naysayers would have said they could never have seen him make the move inside. He will have to make a lot of reads and calls. Plus, there are alot of angles and sideline to sideline plays he will need to make. Man, that would be great if he can be great at the adjustment because we could really use it.

Misi in the middle is going to work. I have been saying it all last year that Misi would be a solid MIKE and our best option at MLB on the team currently. Glad he is finally getting the chance to play there.

If he can do it effectively that solves one of our major problems but i'm with Hoop in that I think he may be a liability in down field coverage. Maybe they take him out in the nickle package. Any way I really hope he proves me wrong.

He may not be an all pro but I bet he does better than what we had last year. Especially against the run

Misi is actually underrated. He has improved tons. People forget he was a DE at Utah and showed some athleticism. He is suspect on passing plays but that is why you take him out on 3rd and long and go nickel,

Here it is:

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/spor...olphins-chatter-heat-marlins-canes-notes.html

Barry Jackson reported that Wheeler and Misi were the LB's in the nickle packages during the first few days of OTA, and Ellerbe was coming of the fields for nickle packages.

"Also, it was interesting that Misi and Wheeler --- and not Ellerbe --- were on the field in some traditional nickel packages."

I saw that, which is different than what we did last year, when Ellerbe and Wheeler were on the field for almost every snap.

In those situations, couldn't we switch LB's positions to put Ellerbe back in the middle? Not saying it's an easy thing to do quickly but, the LB's do have a year together in playing those positions.

Also, do you think that with Delmas, Jones will move back to where he was in 2012? His run support was a big help.
