Why does baseball have a trade deadline when teams still make trades after the fact. I never fully understood that one.

making a trade after the deadline is tough. High priced, underachievers like Javy Lopez can get through cause of their hugh contracts and non-productivity. Same with Livan.
But trying to trade a Andru Jones and stuff is difficult cause you will never get equal value in return and he's so good numerous teams may claim him before the team you want to trade him too does.
