it would seem that way but when Andy Reid chooses Chad henne as your back up to Mahomes there couldn’t be a more completely opposite skill set in the game than those two.
Maybe if the backup is a serious downgrade even if they have a similar skill set it’s to risky to run the same offense so they choose to go in a different direction.?
Mahomes is sort of an outlier to the equation. You are really not going to find a QB with similiar traits to him. I know you can say that about most top tier starting QB's. I dont watch KC games, but i would think that Mahomes scampers and rushing yards is just a product of his escapability, not by play design.
Another thing is KC KNOWS they are ****ed if PM is lost for the season. He makes them great. I'm not knocking Tua, Im on record on a zillion threads saying lock him up, BUT I think we have a top tier, elite weapons, not just an elite QB with weapons he makes look good. I said it the second Trent Green got hurt in preseason back in 99, i had zero clue who Kurt Warner was (along with prob 99% of football fans), but i picked Kurt Warner up that day in fantasy football. ALMOST every at least decent QB is going to excel with these weapons, if they have all the first team reps for a few weeks. (i know this contradicts me wanting to lock up Tua long term, but i dont care, sign him)
Just find a smart QB that can minimalize mistakes and let our weapons do the work. I dont want a back up that we are gong to bring in just to run 3-4 speed options a game. Then if Tua gets hurt we have a QB that already has a mind set that he's made his name on his running ability so he take off to run instead of waiting to see if a WR gets open.
Do i want a **** lefty that can read the defense at the line of scrimmage as opposed to a decent righty that can run but takes longer to process the defense.... well it just depends on how **** that lefty is. I think over the course of the season, option A can maybe get a grasp of the offense and run it better than option B. But if option A is so **** that every other pass is a dead duck, then hell no.
I will say this tho, if we sign Tua to 55+ a year then we better get used to the above 2 options as back up, because we are either going to have low round rookie or vet minimum back up QB
