I have never done a mock draft on here and decided I would try this out and see what everyone thinks. I am going to try to be realistic and address what I believe to be the biggest needs as seen by the front office and what we are missing after the beginning of free agency. Please be kind and try not to run me in the ground if you want someone else. Its just and opinion and I am going to try not to take just my favorite guys in this years draft class.
1. Jake Long- Just like Richmond Webb he will be a dominant tackle on our line for years to come. Smart, talented and plays nasty in the trenches.
2a. Brandon Flowers- A smart and effective corner that plays well in the Zone and Press. Has good make up speed and plays excellent against the run.
2b.John Carlson-Is slipping farther and farther up the draft boards of most teams. The most all around tight end in this draft he is a great blocker with good hands and great route running skills. He reminds me a lot of Jason Witten and I can see him playing that roll in Miami with Peele and Martin developing into solid back up tight ends in different sets.
3. Jeremy Zuttah- Showed great strength and speed at the combine. He is a perfect fit at guard and I think is a great sleeper in round 3. A lot of people are not talking about him but I think he is a steal. He looks to have been a prime reason Rutgers back Rice was so productive at Rutgers. They run a lot in between the tackles and from what film I saw Zuttah was always staying with his blocks.
4. Chris Ellis- I am not to positive he will slip this far in the draft but would be another steal if we can get ahold of him. He is a JT formed DE that could be a OLB in the 34 defense. He has great speed and is efficient coming off blocks. Ive seen him play a lot and he never quits on a play and will always give chase. He would need to bulk a little more to be for suited for a starting role in a BP system. He "IMO" would be a great player for Miami to groom into a starting role.
6a. Mario Urrutia- I do not think a single soul knows who this guys is. He was hurt a lot last season and came out as a junior from Louisville. He is big at 6'6 225 and is the big red zone threat I think we are missing in depth. Wilford will be a big Red Zone threat but this kid could be great with some grooming at the pro level. He is strong and has a long stride. With Brohm at the helm he did quite well going up and catching the ball in the air. His size is TO like and he just needs to become more effective on his route running to overcome his sub par speed.
6b. Kevin O'Connell- He is a rare breed of elusive and big at the quarterback position. He would be a developmental Qb but I think he could be a big time player. Lets not forget Brady came out of this round so its not a bad idea. He improved each year at San Diego State and has seen a drop for missing five games this year with a thumb injury. He came back from it so I do not think it will be an issue. He just seems like a good pick with a 6'6 frame at 225 pounds. I think he is a BP like Qb and looks a lot like a Romo on paper.
7a. Jamie Silva- Hope we can get him there. Im not going to mention to much because we all have seen most of what he brings. With that being said we get a young special teams impact player and someone who will bring a work ethic to improve greatly at the pro level. He sure did hurt my Hokies on a few plays these last two years. Thank God he is gone pro just hope he come on to my team for once.
7b.DeCody ***g- I want to say Justin Harper from Tech here but I think that is more wishful thinking and a little bit of bias as being a Tech fan. ( The other two Tech picks are worthy of their choice and not bias -I see them as being available in these rounds and addressing needs Miami has) ANYWAYS- ***g is a local talent from Florida and is worthy of our last selection. He is an all around good athlete with great size. He needs to develop his routes and become a stronger threat when double covered. He disappears at times during games but when he shows up its usually big. Worth the risk and adds depth and size to a small and quick WR depth chart in Miami.
