Seasoned Veteran
the third version of my mock draft, naturally it's early and we have no idea who is going to declare and who is going to blow up at the combine, so take everything here with a grain of salt.
1. Clint Sintim OLB/DE Virginia -It's rare that you find someone coming from college pre-programmed for the 3-4, but Sintim is. and playing under Al Groh a Parcell's disciple doesnt hurt. i know i know, everyone is going to point to Chris Long, but last year our problems on the offensive line were too huge to ignore. Sintim has 11 sacks in 10 games and could come in and play right away. Joey Porter and Sintim on opposite sides of our LB corp is a nightmare for QB's, adding additional pressure to the QB can also cover up for our weak pass defense.
2a. B.J. Raji NT Boston College- he's ginourmous. 6'1'' 325 and still managed 4 sacks in 9 games this season. Jason Ferguson is a solid player in the middle, but is on the wrong side of 30 and we could really use a big ol behemoth up front. he'll be a great run stuffer.
2b. Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest- OK i swear the ACC trend here is not on purpose. Alphonso Smith may not be a huge name and at 5'9'' his size is probably what cause him to drop this low, but had 13 passes broken up and six INT's. Even though he is 5'9'', he is 190 pounds so he's not diminutive and can be physical.
3.Michael Hamlin SS Clemson- really I SWEAR the ACC thing is not intentional, i'm a Pac-10 guy to be honest, but i just like the talent the ACC has to offer for us. Hamlin put up great numbers this season with 91 tackles, 7 passes broken up and 6 picks. 6 INT's for a strong safety is incredible. he's got a nice frame at 6'3'' 205 and can bring the wood.
4. Pat White Qb/WR WVU- ok, the ACC streak is broken. I'm a big Pat White fan, he's got a good body for a WR at 6'2'' 192 (i'd like to see him put on 10 pounds), and is also a very efficient QB with 21 td's to only 6 ints and a completion percentage that has hovered around 66% the past 3 years. he's also hovered around 1000 yards rushing every season. can lineup anywhere in the wildcat, come in and be a QB if need be, or a RB in certain situations. very versatile and can do a variety of things for us.
5. Marko Mitchell WR Nevada- he's a big guy at 6'4'' 200 and should be a powerful possession receiver. averaged over 21 ypc in 07 and 18 ypc in 08, hit the endzone 10 times this season. injuries have shown that our receiving corps lacks depth but with White an Mitchell, that should help compliment Bess, Ginn and Camarillo.
6. Jasper Brinkley ILB South Carolina- coming off a horrendous knee injury in 2007, he played solid this season with 5 tackles and 2.5 sacks. if he can regain his old form, could make a nice starter alongside Crowder, if not he's good depth.
7. Louis Vasquez OG Texas Tech- didnt allow a sack in 2007, impressive considering how much Tech passes the ball. he's a mammoth at 6'6'' 335, but isnt a statue and can move his feet. in round 7, not a bad depth selection.
7. Ronnie Palmer ILB Arizona- good depth guy. has two main strengths: pass coverage and getting to the passer on the blitz. Arizona mainly used him in pass coverage relying on a 4 man rush, though he is a capable blitzer and registered an impressive 11 tfl.
OK, i know there are some critiques to my draft, one i dont address Tight End, i like Dennis Pitta out of BYU in the 3rd, but i felt like our pass defense was the bigger need there. It's also LB heavy, but i feel like depth at LB is critical to run stopping late in games, our depth at ILB is also non existent with only Ayodele, Crowder and Torbor at the position. We address a lot of needs in this draft adding some versatility in Pat White, a big receiver in Mitchell, improved pass defense and some youth in the front 7.
I of course am open to critiques and comments, but i would appreciate elaboration as opposed to just comments like 'no' or 'this draft is stupid'.
