alright, here is another mock draft from me, i thought it might be time to do another one now that we know we're getting 2 comp picks (one in the 6th and one in the 7th rounds). again i do pretty extensive research into these picks and dont just pull names out of a hat, thought i'd never put myself on the level of CK or Boomer, however i would enjoy their opinions of this mock.
1. Chris Long DE/OLB VT- for the first time i really say and thought about this one, but i again arrived at the same conclusion, and solid LT can still be found in the second round whereas a dominant edge rusher most likely cannot be. The biggest difference i think is that Jake Long isnt going to be a slouch by any means, but he won't be dominant, he just isnt that type of player, whereas Chris Long has the ability to be a pro bowler in our defense.
2a. Antoine Cason CB Arizona- i've never wavered on this pick, if he's on the board (and i think he will be), i dont see how we can pass up on him with all the question marks we have in the secondary, because if there is one thing you can say about this kid its that he always gives exactly what you expect from him, he will be a steadying force in our secondary, he isnt flashy, but gets the job done better than any other corner in the draft IMO, he's a cant miss pick.
2b. Carl Nicks T Nebraska-now i know some of you are like "hmm, yeah right, like he's still on the board here..." but i think he is, for two reasons, first because there are six or seven guys who some teams will have ahead of him on their boards (Long, Clady, Williams, Otah, Cherilus, Baker and in some circles Collins), and i honestly dont think eight OT's will be picked in the first 60 odd picks, secondly Nicks has some legal 'trouble' surrounding him, which turns some teams off automatically, and they'd rather go after a guy with no history of problems, here's what i've been able to find about Nicks' legal trouble, essentially, he was at a party, the cops came and broke it up, he didnt leave, and so the cops arrested him for not clearing out. Ok, i'd say about 85-90% of college kids drink underage, he's not the only one in this draft class that has done that, and so he chooses not to leave? ok, that might not have been the best move, but still, it's nothing violent, he's not going to jail, basically he was at a college party that got out of hand, big deal. I think he's a steal at this point and i think he'll be there.
3. Dustin Keller TE Purdue- in past mocks i liked us going safety here, but i think with Crocker on board now we're pretty deep there, even if we're not as talented as we'd like to be, so i think a TE gets the nod, Keller is a bit small for a tight end at 6'2'' 242, which might turn some teams off, but he's got a 41'' vertical which in my opinion makes up for his lack in height. If anything his lack in height, but solid weight should make him a better blocker giving him a lower center and a broader frame. althetic in the sense that he ran a 4.53 40 and benched 26 reps to go along with his impressive vert. I could see him turning in a Randy McMichael type steal in the third round (though hopefully minus all the spousal abuse)
4. Paul Hubbard WR Wisconsin- i have to say, i cant shy away from his measurables. At 6'2'' 221 and running a 4.38 40 at his pro day to match up with his 39 1/2'' vertical, I'd definetly say he's a specimen. he's coming off a knee injury which is why he's slated to go late 3rd early 4th round, but if he's able to run and jump like that it looks like the knee is fine to me. I think he is an ideal complement to Ted Ginn Jr., he's got size to come across the middle, and also the speed to stretch the field opposite Ginn, makes us a matchup nightmare for defenses (who do you play deep on? of you play deep on Hubbard, he beats you over the middle for 15 yards, if you play deep on Ginn, Hubbard beats you deep, if you play deep on both Ronnie Brown and new draftee Dustin Keller will wreak havoc on the middle)
5. a concussion. ouch.
6a. Mike Fladdell OG Rutgers- he's massive. and i mean massive. at 6'8'' 325 this kid is ginourmous. Has a good pedigree as Rutgers has produced some good backs such as Brian Leonard and Ray Rice, so that should help him. in the 6th round, picking up a massive body like this can only do good for your team, provides solid depth and could possibly compete for a starting job--more than you could ask for from a 6th rounder.
6b. Mark Bradford WR Stanford- another physical specimen, at 6' 211 he ran a 4.49 40 a his pro day and was able to notch a 41'' vertical. playing at Stanford with all their problems has probably hurt his stock. He really gets up and attacks the ball in flight which with his vertical should be expected, has solid COD skills and moves his hips well coming in and out of routes, not afraid to make a catch in traffic, could make a solid 4th WR.
7a. Jason Shirley DT Fresno St. - he's 6'5'', 330 pounds and as if that wasnt impressive enough he runs a 4.98 40. that's not a typo, he runs a sub 5.00 40 at 6'5'' 330 pounds. I think its pretty apparent why we'd want someone like that on the roster.
7b. Louis Holmes DE/OLB Arizona- he's got 1st round measurables at 6'6'' 270, and a 4.77 40, but his production lacked at Arizona, probably needs to put on a little bit more lower body strength as his leg push is almost non existent after his initial explosion, though perhaps allowing him to build up more steam coming from the linebacker spot would help that. He's has a decent football IQ in his ability to roll off blocks and play the flats well when needed, he also is good at disengaging to get his hands up and bother passes at the line. If nothing else would be an asset on special teams.
alright, so there you have it. I know it's missing a quarterback, but there wasnt any round where i thought that a QB made sense over the value we could get at other positions, I'm also a firm believer in not spending 2 first day picks 2 years in a row on a QB (you can only play them one at a time, unlike almost any other position). I also feel that it's time we gave John Beck a real shot, we'll have a better Oline this year with Nicks, Smiley, Satele, and Carey anchoring the line, and perhaps Hadnot coming back or Fladell inserted at the other G spot, and a much improved WR corps with Ginn, Wilford, Hubbard, Hagan and Bradford, and a real TE with Keller. I think that this draft should focus on surrounding Beck(or any QB) with the type of talent he needs to succeed rather than looking for a one position savior-which doesnt exist in this draft. Plus, i think next years Qb crop is a little deeper and more impressive with the likes of Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Curtis Painter, Cullen Harper, and Chase Daniel and even some later round talents that have skills to impress like Rudy Carpenter and Wilie Tuitama, i think its a much better idea to hold off on picking a Qb this year, because i'd hate to see us burn a pick on Chad Henne and because of that feel like we have to pass on Tim Tebow come next season.
comments? questions? let's have em.
