I know i just made a mock a few days ago, but i think it might be time for a change in philosophy.
1. Jake Long T Michigan- this is the first time that i've put him atop my draft board and here is the reason why: Making this pick here, whereas Chris Long might be the better player (and in my opinion he is), Jake Long gives us maximum flexibility to fill other needs in the later rounds. I know a lot of people are big advocates of drafting the BPA, but i think that when you have as many needs as the Dolphins do, you have to pick the player that gives you the best chance to fill as many needs as possible, so i think Jake Long is a smart choice.
2a. Antoine Cason CB Arizona-in my opinion the best CB in the draft, he has it all, intelligence, production, hardware, clutch, experience, he is the most complete corner in the draft and always rises to a challenge, gives our secondary a boost and really gives us playmakers on every level on defense.
2b. Erin Henderson ILB Maryland- stands 6'2'' 244 so he has the size to play inside in the 3-4, ran slow at the combine at 4.73, but benched 23 reps and has a 31 inch vertical, so his athleticism isnt a question. plays with a lot of heart and intensity, should make a nice ILB tandem with Channing Crowder.
3. Brad Cottam TE Tennessee- at 6'7'' 270 he certainly has the size to hold his own on the line, he also ran a 4.68 40 which should make him a matchup nightmare for defenses. jumps well with a 34'' vertical, makes him a gigantic red zone target and should be a solid blocker.
4. Josh Johnson QB San Diego- I really dont think drafting a QB any earlier than this is a smart choice, however, draft one later and there are no options left, so Johnson is the choice here. he's got a solid frame at 6'2'' 213, and ran a 4.44 40, so he's incredibly mobile. He's a solid decision maker completed 72% of his passes and tossed for 36tds and only one pick in 07. a dual threat he ran for 700+ yards in 06, but is a passer first.
5. no pick
6a. Kenny Iwebema DE/OLB Iowa-incredibly athletic at 6'4'' 274, runs well at 4.77 40, benched 26 reps and jumps a 35.5 inch vert. Iowa has a history of sending pass rushers to the NFL, he's got all the tools to succeed and as the first pick of the 6th round should be extremely good value.
6b. Mark Bradford Wr Stanford- a very good athlete, he's got good size (6' 211) and speed a 4.49 40, he also jumps a 41" vertical, in the 6th round to get an athlete like that is a steal, because if nothing else he can be a special teams ace.
7a. Will Arnold G LSU- he's solid. he's not spectacular, but solid. doesnt give up sacks and rarely gets flagged for penalties, exactly what you want in a guard. stands 6'4'' at 322 so has impressive size, and benched 34 reps which shows he's got great strength and should develop into a decent pass protector. speed is the biggest knock on him, but in the 7th round, he should provide solid depth.
7b. Lance Ball RB Maryland- stands 5'9'' 225, wasnt invited to the combine but runs in the 4.4's, ran for 768 yards and 12 td's in 07, and averaged 4.2 ypc, he reminds me of a Michael Turner type, and should be an interesting player to watch and see if he can be productive.
