What you talkin' bout?!
After reading about a billion mocks (actual number is 725,345,001 mock drafts read), I've finally decided to jump aboard and offer up my amateurish and uninformed draft picks. My rational behind these picks are a combination of BPA and team needs right now to help us win...or at least kick the mud outta the Pats, Bills and Jets (God I hate the Jets).
NOTE: the one thing I realized while compiling this list...DAMN, we got lots 'o picks! (it's about time)
1 – Laron Landry (S – LSU)
This guy can straight up ball. He's bigger, faster, stronger and he
possesses that fire, the x-factor that you can't train or practice. Looking at our needs, besides OL help, we need to address the secondary, and Laron free's us up to shift Jason Allen around and really strengthen our backfield for years to come.
NOTE: This is under the assumption that Brady Quinn does not fall to #9. I thought about Levi Brown here, and even though I feel Brown is a hell of a player, I don't think he's top 10 material...also Okoye is an amazing prospect, but our DL is tuff with a “uff”.
2a - Joe Staley (OT – Cent. Michigan)
Great size, speed, movement, and he is still very green. I've only seen a little bit of tape on him, but every other piece of supporting research points to a future stud at LT in the NFL for a long time to come. Get him in and let Houck and Cam show him the way, and develop him into our new Richmond Webb (boy do I miss Webb).
2b - Drew Stanton (QB – Michigan St.)
I've been a fan of his for a long time. I know he didn't have a stellar season, but that team “blew dog's balls”, as my grandmother likes to say. He's got ideal size, a good arm, he's smart, and he's a great pocket passer. When he's on, he flashes qualities that remind me of Tom Brady. We need a quarterback to groom, and since I believe we are out of the running for Quinn, Drew Stanton is the next best prospect in this draft.
3 - Jason Hill (WR – Wash St.)
Blazingly fast, good hands needs some work on his route running. I say, plug him in as our KR/PR, maybe 4th WR to fill the hole that Wes left (although the hole in my heart will never go away). I think he would make a dangerous return man with some gametime experience.
4 - Eric Wright (CB – UNLV)
Speedy, athletic, good hands. Still raw, needs to grow up a little and not the ideal height (what's the deal with these short CB's coming out, College coaches need to convert some of these tall receivers who can't catch...who said Hagan). Let Wright get his feet wet on special teams, maybe even try out as a return man. Plays with a lot of emotion, but needs to be coached up.
6 - Scott Chandler (TE – Iowa)
Great speed for his size...and this boy is big (6'7” 270lbs runs a 4.78 40). Good hands. Perfect for picking up short 1st downs and in the red-zone. Needs to work on his blocking, he has the tools, just needs some of that Hudson Houck juju to become a better blocker. Doesn't beat his wife.
7a - Mansfield Wrotto (OG – Ga. Tech) “My Sleeper Pick”
Good size and athleticism, but is super raw. Needs to get the fundamentals down (he was a DT for most of his career). But if he can learn the position, I think he can become an amazing player.
7b - Cameron Stephenson (OG – Rutgers)
Still learning his position, but has a lot of people talking. Won't win any foot races, but he plays with a lot of intensity. Part of the reason Rutgers was one of the teams that allowed the fewest sacks last year...all right I don't give a squirt about about this meathead, I just want to see a “Stephenson” back on our line.
...and we might even get another pick with the Olacko Makee trade. All in all, I like what Cam and Mueller are up to. Breakdown, breakthrough.
A 2nd and a 7th for Wes! Come one, that's pretty sweet.
NOTE: Made an edit, got rid of the 5th round pick I mistakenly put in.
