ok, so here we go, a mock draft, it'll be a little difficult to do since FA is going on right now and there is no telling who we'll get and at what position, so this mock will only take into account players currently signed at the time of this posting.
1. Chris Long DE Virginia-the combine reinforced him as the number one pick, his numbers were excellent. the thing that intrigues me most is how well he moves for his size, at 6'3'' 285 pounds he ran a 4.71 40, that's impressive, and likely gives him the flexibility to play with a hand on the ground or in an up position. a solid run stopper which is crucial to being a DE in the 3-4 scheme, with that speed he should also be an effective pass rusher especially when Miami opts to send Taylor and Porter as well, will give us one of the best 4 man outside rushes with Taylor, Porter, Long and Holliday all able to get to the QB.
2.Antoine Cason CB Arizona-CB is one of the deepest positions on the first day of the draft and i feel that Cason will likely be passed over for some Juniors with 'upside'and who have a little more flash. Cason is a player who plays up to competition and will thrive against the top recievers in the AFC East, he is the best corner in the draft and will become a top ten corner in the NFL. He doesn't run an impressive 40 time (4.49), but is a sizeable corner at 6' 190 who also has a solid vertical of 35.5 (which means at the peak of his vertical his highest point is almost ten feet in the air). He has a nose for the ball and uses his smarts and positioning ability to make up for his speed, rarely if ever gets beat deep even agaisnt faster more explosive opponents (see his performances against DeSean Jackson who ran a 4.31 40), is a return threat and also uses his return abilities to take INT's to the house, scored 4 TD's his senior year (2 Int's 2 PR's), had 5 interceptions total (along with 14 breakups) and would have had more were teams not so adverse to throwing at him. has the ability and size to play FS if needed. Allows Will Allen to shift to the #2 corner which he is more suited to.
2. Jordy Nelson WR Kansas St.- I really like Nelson and think he is a sleeper at the end of the second round. he has impressive size at 6'3'' 217 and amazing speed for that size running a 4.49 40. had an impressize 2007 averaging over 10 catches a game and racked up 1606 total recieving yards for an average of 133 yards a game, he also found the endzone 11 times. He's a threat on PR as well scoring twice from there in 07 (he also threw two TD's). has quick feet and good COD skills, not just for his size, but overall. provides a compliment to Ted Ginn with his size, but also doesnt give up any speed, he's a big target who should be able to body up on most corners and outrun a fair amount of safeties, a great player for a young QB to have. Could remind Bill Parcells with his size and speed combo of a Keyshawn Johnson type.
3. Gosder Cherilus T Boston College- I have to pray he falls here, because the next best tackle (in my opinion) Anthony Collins of Kansas ran an abysmal 5.53 40 at the combine--now combine numbers dont mean much (espcially for o linemen), but that is incredibly slow for someone at 317. Cherilus is a solid tackle who likely will be a guy who stays in the league for a good 10+ years, not likely to develop into a high profile lineman, as he wont get his name called very often but will do everything asked of him, very good value in the 3rd round. he's a model of consistency.
4. Caleb Campbell SS Army- a force in the secondary coming in at 6'1'' 229 and running a 4.6 40 that is probably just a little slower than he actually is, he is ridiculously strong benching 225 24 times. His impressive combination of skills makes him tailor made to covering TE's and delivering punishing hits to WR's coming across the middle. Dolphins have lacked an enforcer in their secondary for a long time and Campbell could fill that role from day one. the additions of him and Cason add size and physicality to a secondary that has lacked it for too long.
5. no pick
6. Louis Holmes DE Arizona- might not last this long because a team might fall in love with his athleticism. Didnt put up impressive numbers at Arizona. he has the ability to play both a 3-4 and a 4-3 scheme and is in the mold of a Jason Taylor at 6'6'' 270 pounds (could still add some weight, especially in his lower body) and a 4.77 40 time--he also had an impressive vertical of 32.5. could be used as a big OLB or a smaller DE depending on the circumstances, provides depth to our LB's and DL, is another tweener in the Parcell's mode. Has had a couple off the field issues which might scare some teams off, but nothing to be concerned about (he got into a few fights basically, none of them were with teammates).
7.Derrick Morse C Miami (FL)- listed as a Center because that's where he played in 07, but is really more of a guard. at 6'4'' 326 he has the size that Parcells likes in interior linemen, but he moves decently well with a 5.2 40. can play all three interior spots and has a solid work ethic, provides depth in the short term and potential in the long term.
