Well, let me start out by saying that I forgot something in my earlier write up.
I forgot to say how nice it was to smell the fresh mowed grass of a football field !!!!!!!!!!!
Let me also say, that given the apology from Ricky, I will still hold a grudge against him, but will forgive him enough to now be able to root for 53 players instead of 52. I am still pulling hard for Ronnie Brown but there is no denial in the fact that Ricky Williams can just plain run the ball.
Now that I got that out of the way, lets talk Dolphins Football.
The Qb's.
Ferrotte was OK with the midrange to short passes but his longer throws were a little off this evening. He did connect on one nice pass to Chambers, but it was because Chambers made one heck of a nice one handed grab.
Feeley's longer throws were a tad better than the rest tonight, but once again, he is locking onto his receivers too much. AND he is still throwing the short stuff too hard, and without touch. He had one of the Fb's open in the flat 10 feet in front of him, and he whipped it in there like he was 20 yards down field. The ball hit his hands, chest high too, but it was way too hard, and fell incomplete.
Sage still throws a nice spiral, but nothing worth mentioning tonight.
Brock Berlin hits the ground pretty darn good, and pretty soon I hear he might be asked to start trying to hit the broadside of a barn. He was terrible out there, and to his defense, looked a bit nervous.
Rb's
Ricky Williams came back to earth just a little this evening. He still hits the hole better than anyone we have. This is not a knock on what he did, because he did have a couple of nice runs, but I must warn everyone that he is playing against the third and fourth string defense. He may not know nothing about the playbook, but he just has running back instincts that stand out. He started one play heading into the gap between Center, and RG, but there was no gap. He stutter stepped just like most of the other Rb's, but what he does different is he still keeps his forward motion going, fluidly! He took two steps to the side, and made 5 yards out of nothing.
Lamar Gordon was doing stutter stepping way too much. Maybe it was first day jitters. Maybe it was the first teammers clogging the holes, but all I know is he needs to just make his mind up faster. He made his mind up on one play. It might have been the best run of the day too. He split the right side with one step, and was off and running. That was about all he did this evening though.
Minor probably had the best practice, but on one play Tony Bua could have knocked the snot out of him. He still hit him, but eased up after initial contact. Minor also had two real nice runs. One was a nice run to the outside, and the other a nice run up the gut for a TD. He made a real nice spin move after a catch too that gained some good yards.
Sammy Morris did not look very good and the same goes for Kay J Harris.
Wr's
Boston made two real nice catches, one being a nice dive on the sidelines. He was wide open once for a possible TD, but was overthrown by a mile.
Chambers was just fine, running good routes, making Travis Daniels, and Sam Madison work to stay with him. I think he caught 4 passes.
Booker also had a nice one handed catch on an out pass. He had just turned off his route, and only had time to cradle the ball with the one hand. I think he may also have used his body a little on that catch, but nonetheless it was nice to see a pass come in hot on the cut off from a route. He made three nice receptions that I saw.
Gilmore was wide wide open on a fly pattern, but the pass was off target, and headed toward the post. He still made a nice move inside and caught it. Ferrotte was the Qb........I think.
Ronald Bellamy whooped the pants off Travis Daniel's on one play, but the pass was overthrown on what would have been a score.
The Oline
You know what? Vernon Carey may be on the short end of the stick a lot going up against JT but he most definitely matches up better that Wade Smith ever did. It's great to see that when the two of the lock horns (JT seems to be testing his strength) Carey does not fold like Smith did. I mean JT has the momentum of going forward, while Carey Backs up, but once they locked up Carey showed he is pretty darn strong. He would make JT work to get the next two, or three steps back. That my friends is a difference of at least a second for a Qb not to get blindsided.....like the last three years!
McKinney did a lot better in the evening practice. Maybe he read what I said about him in the morning session.:)
Wade Smith continued to impress me though. He may be working with the second and third teams but he is getting after it and looking a lot better suited to be using the power of his legs, than his arms. He has the footwork to be good at either Center, or Guard. Albeit he may end up as a backup, he is showing that's not what he wants. Dude showed some more Attitude this evening. I like that! Only Richmond Webb could be Mr. Calm Cool and Collective, and get away with it.
Anthony Alabi got his butt handed to him by JT once today, and it was not even close. JT just blew up on him, smacked him in the chest with both arms, and was by him in a split second. The crowd let out a nice woohhhhhh. That was a welcome to school play right there!!
Damian Cook is another one with some attitude out there. He was in one of two near fights out there. I wish I could tell you who it was, but my guess is it was either Holiday, or Roth. They stayed locked up for a good twenty seconds after the whistle, and had to be broken apart. Cook was also Schooled by JT on one play, but he does have potential.
Jeno James I think was another lineman that had a near altercation out there, but I'm not too sure of either player because they backed themselves into the players, and I could not see for sure. He is looking good though, and taking a liking to the teaching going on.
Stocker MacDugal is another interesting player. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder. At the end of a lot of plays he is getting in a final shove on whomever he is going against. I think I like the odds of him being in the first real fight if there is one.
OK there is a lot more I could go on about but let me just add a couple things more then I'll answer some questions if anyone asks.
The Qb's switched today with Feeley taking first snaps in the morning, and Ferrotte taking the first ones in the afternoon.
The Cb's however, did not. Travis Daniels was on the other side of Madison for the morning, and evening sessions. Hmmm? Reggie Howard better be studying that playbook!! Daniel's did get beat a few times today, but so did a lot of the corners. It could have looked worse for them had the Qb's, or even one of them been on target more.
Manuel Wright had a pretty good set of practices, however, he had a red jersey on in the evening session. He still worked, and took some hits, but I think he may have tweaked a hammy, or someone might have stepped on his foot. He made a nice play against KayJ Harris, making him fumble, but KJ recovered it.
JT is looking real real strong.
Zach made a couple of plays behind the line.
The defense is really working a lot on shooting gaps. It looks like we are going to see some aggressive blitzing, and a lot of stunts.
Alright, I'm done for now. I'm on Vacation and the clubs close earlier sometimes on Monday. I will be back out there again tomorrow.
