I wish we could get Gannon to talk to the fans about dealing with some of omar's tweets.
 
I realize there's a lot of support for Jared Odrick here and I still like him as a player but I believe now, as I have since Vernon was drafted, that Olivier Vernon and Jamaal Westerman should hold rotate/compete for the base downs at left defensive end, and that Jared Odrick should rotate in at defensive tackle on those downs and then be a permanent fixture in our nickel packages as a pass rushing defensive tackle. He can still get 500-600 snaps in those roles, which is essentially a starter's load. I'm not saying Odrick should just be a "backup".

When Westerman was signed, I took a look at how he played with the Jets. While I don't think he's necessarily a GOOD player (play maker), he was a strong player that played the run really well, and had good enough athleticism to make plays with his motor in pass rush. Essentially, I graded him similar to Jeremy Mincey, who just collected a 4 year $20 million deal with the Jaguars. On that basis, I said that to get Westerman on a veteran's minimum deal, was a good buy.

And when I took a look at Olivier Vernon, I thought he played similarly to Westerman, and said that the very least you get with OV is a Jamaal Westerman, but probably more because he's younger and still has more development ahead of him.

The only problem is I don't think Miami has a TRUE nickel edge rusher...aside from Cameron Wake. That's pretty much the only one. Jeff Ireland needed to find another one somehow but he didn't.

westerman had a decent get off of the ball in new york but no rush arsenal...jeremy mincey is a bring your lunchpale high effort try hard overachiever...i don't know that i agree with having odrick off the field on first and 2nd downs at end or in a dt rotation with starks and solia on those downs but i definitely agree with he should be rushing from the inside in the nickle...i think the more run you give westerman especially in a game the the more diminishing the return...and vernon is he really ready for that kind of load...someones got to spell wake also to keep him from wearing down...

the odd man out to me barring injury is tony mcdaniel...i just don't see him getting enough snaps as a nickle dt to warrant that large cap number...

westermans wearing out somebody though in camp...i'm guessing it's yeatman...maybe the feinga guy who needs to go
 
I think odrick is in for a huge year. Im thinking about 8+ sacks and a bunch more TFL. I agree he should move inside on passing downs (which im sure he will) but he is definitly worth starting and its the main reason we let langford walk i think.
 
i can see 8 sacks from odrick if he gets the snap #'s i think he will...but i see more success pass rush wise in the nickle inside than off the edge...he rushed some on the outside last year in 4 man fronts when we finally took langford off of it and looked ok...still think though his pass rush strength is in a phone booth where he can use that quickness off the ball and hand strength to wreak havoc in the backfield...

The bottom line for me on Odrick is, there's a job that he's good at, and there's a job he's "ok" at...and I don't want him expending so much energy on the "ok" job that when you ask him to do the thing he's really good at, he loses his edge.

Right now with the roles he's in line for, he should be in line to end up at least a 700-800 snap type of player, if you think about it. If he's the base LDE in the 4-3 packages then reduces down to DT in your nickel pass rush packages, then that's similar to like a Jason Pierre-Paul or Justin Tuck....and those guys paced for between 850 and 1000 snaps during a 16 game regular season.

I just don't know that he's proven he's that kind of player yet.
 
the sooner martin gets revved up as 1st team RT the better. Having Wake to go against can only accelerate his learning curve.

i'd agree with that...i don't know that he's got that kind of stamina either...300 lbs he better be in terrific shape...i just want him somewhere in the starting lineup...i want the best interior pass rusher i saw last year on the field as much as i can get him...
 
Going into that draft, I was incredibly high on Odrick, Hughes, and Dunlap (on the d-line)

I shouldn't be in charge of drafting d-linemen it seems (although Dunlap was very good his rookie season!)

I don't care about starts, I care more about snaps, and snap quality. In 2008, Randy Starks wasn't technically a starter (I don't think) but he had the 2nd most DL snaps on the team and as I kept trying to tell people, was our best DL, had the biggest impact on the games.

Paul Soliai is considered a starter but he won't tend to get more than 500-550 snaps a season. The "backup" defensive lineman could very well end up with 600+.

They say it's not how you start but you finish, right? So maybe we should stop looking for "starters" and start looking for "finishers". If we're caught up on titles and labels and whatnot, then label the role I have in mind for Odrick a "finisher" role instead of a "starter" role.
