McFadden out for the game.

#64 Jake Grove, C

1st play – lined up directly on ngata, drive blocks to the right, ngata holds him up just enough in getting to the 2nd level as grove gets their a second too late. Ngata is big and nasty and sets everything up for those lb’s; I’m really excited to watch this matchup. Shrort gain on the play.

2nd: gets his assignment but suggs sacks Russell beating the tackle

3rd and long: looks for someone to hit, gets on and blocks r.lewis in space successfully as run play nets a few yards, way short of 1st down.

2nd possession:

1st down: (vs. 4 man front) drives to his right, doesn’t find anyone, quickly recovers to nail a linebacker out of the play but the run was already stuffed up in his area. *this is what I mean when I say he was a little bit out of place in the Oakland zone blocking scheme. He’s better taking on bigger NT’s 1-1 and he’s a quick, smart center. But when he’s pulling like a guard he’s just average.

2: Hits Ngata, keeps going, lunges at linebacker and gets a piece. 4 yard gain off right guard.

3: zone blocking scheme, helps out left guard. Totally away from the play, where Russell is quickly sacked for a safety as RT gets killed by Baltimore pass rush.

1st down-chips, rolls to second level but misses his man a few yards down the field. 2 yard gain.

2nd-takes ngata on with strong hand punch 1-1 and neutralizes him. Somebody got beat though, -3

3-stacks his man, not ngata, nice positioning. Few yards on 3rd and long

p.s. THE RAIDERS SUCK!!! They have like -9 yards total offense in this 1st quarter thus far.

Let’s look at Jason brown really quick on this drive (I might do this from time to time depending on how tired I get. Its 2 a.m.) He’s going against obviously a much weaker defense.

1-vs. 4 man front, gets good push on the DT to help open the hole on pure strength. His balance fails him and he falls on the play.
2-fine pass pro, 3 step drop and throw
3: quick hand punch neutralizes his man in pass pro

Guys, you have to do this to judge players. Otherwise all the variables (whose playing guard next to you, whos running the ball, whats going on in the game etc.) are apparent. Here I’m able to isolate grove from what else is going on out there with a poor team.

back to our boy…

1: triple team on ngata, lol with grove a part of it, because he’s the only guy on that side on this play. Successful, though that’s what you should expect. Zone blocking scheme from Oakland. This is not how we usually run.
2: blocks down well on a linebacker pushes him back. The dude spins off and comes back to help out the play after short gain.
3rd and 3: hits on the first level, by the time he starts moving towards the second level the play is dead in the backfield, play by suggs. Trips and falls on play after the fact.

Brown on 1st and goal: gets some push as does everyone else on the line. They’re line is a great unit-guarantee they plug someone in there at center and don’t lose much of a step. NOT a knock on brown. He’s good.

2nd down-drops the LB. touchdown. They had Ngata on offense in this place leading the way. A lot of power on this ravens team.

Grove:
1- pulls on the screen, pass incomplete. Flag down-grove called for illegal man down field, doesn’t look happy about it. 1st penalty I’ve seen from him in the three games I’ve looked at. That’s a good statistical thing. I guarantee you if you can somehow find the stat, he doesn’t have a lot. Smart player.
2- Good job in pass pro. Finally raiders get a first down
3- No problem in zone coverage pass pro, helping the guard. They complete a pass.
4- Hard to see what happens here on 2nd and 1. Grove gets initial good pop, but the play is stuffed for no gain and it’s tough to see who ended up making the tackle/getting beat for position.
5- Grove and boys push forward for a first down. He pushed ngata back just enough.
6- Good enough job in zone pass pro. Russell throws a good enough pass to the other team.

16-0 ravens. 2nd quarter. Here comes to Oakland offense.
Lol, Higgins just caught a KO on the 5 yard line and stepped out of bounds. This is very amusing. Somehow I feel when we get raiders players you don’t get them, you rescue them.

1-drive blocks, gets his man decent, ravens defense swarms. One yard gain. He’s gotta get bigger and stronger (Grove). He’s got the tenacity and you can tell he’s been playing center forever. It might also help him with his durability. Bulk him up guys….

2-misses his block on second level. Like I said, he’s pretty athletic…but this is not his forte. He just looks like he needs to be hitting someone right off the snap.

3-grove, decent awareness on the blitz, which they pick up. Short of first down anyway.

2nd half:

1-doubles down on pass play. Fine. He knows what he’s doing. I want more plays where I can see his strength. Let’s go raiders.
2-stays with his man in pass pro. Makes contact, adjusts in space and fronts the guy again and then pushes him past Russell. What a throw for a 60 yard bomb inside the 10.
3- again, going against #94 Bannen, blocks down well on run play.
4-rollout, not really involved in the play.
5-one step and throw, not really involved again. Jeez. Fg attempt.

1-does his job in pass pro. They’re playing catch up here, its time to watch this guy pass block.
2-good awareness. Comes over to help rg and in the process shoves the defender AND his guy down with one hand punch. Haha. I liked that.
3-against a 3 man front, he fights ngata one on one with quick hand punch and neutralizes him.
4-he let himself get off balance and ngata easily pushed him over. Still Russell avoids sack and they make a huge play inside the 5 yard line. One of grove’s few mistakes.
5-blocks down, pushes ngata back. Ngata still keeps balance and makes the play two yards downfield. Grove needs to get alittle bigger.
6-fine pass pro in zone. Lewis stops WR at 1 yard line.

I just got a glimpse of him from the backside. Pure fyi stuff-He’s a tough looking guy with long hair. Should gain a little bit of size for miami’s scheme. This guy’s solid-not too spectacular but gets the job done and makes few mistakes. I’m sure they’re thinking – let’s bulk him up, put him in a power scheme and let him use his toughness. Last play reviewed it was a td. 22-10 now, end of 3rd.

1-does his job in zone pass pro. Russell has time, wr misses the catch.
2-initital pop, bounces off and locks up lewis on the second level.
3-grove helps neutralize ngata on double team to give Russell time for completion. Short of 1st down. 4th and 1, what will they do with ten mins left in their own territory? They’re punting..

pretty uneventful from here on out. Raiders abandoned the run. He did his job in pass protection pretty well vs. a tough defense. Didn’t help on ngata on one all out blitz on 3rd down with 7 mins left and Russell got sacked, hard to tell if that was his fault though. On second and 3rd look, he was somehow responsible for an LB and Ngata on this play. I think the LG was supposed to get Ngata…

He’s good. Oakland isn’t. Baltimore defense is great and totally changes what you do (which we know all too well). Just turned 29, really knows how to play the position and they like his demeanor. He can run and pass block well and does a good job against bigger NT’s like Wilfork and Jenkins. I think they (the Phins) have a lot of faith in their conditioning/training people, as we saw with the healthy roster this year as opposed to 2007. You need not only a good center, but great guards to have any success against Baltimore up the middle, and even then it’s real tough. Grove-Let’s get him up to 310-315. If Thomas and Smiley can return to form (I watched Thomas in that Jets game on tape – good stuff, this guy has got it. We need him back) we’re going to have a chance to have a really strong line with some depth on the interior. They need to draft a backup tackle. Peace.

I think Duke Robinson, Oklahoma Guard, would be a nice pickup in round 2, probably at 2a? I watched a lot of Oklahoma games as Phil Loadholt, the massive LT, went to high school here at Fountain-Ft. Carson. I thought Robinson did a great job and often had to fend off d-lineman who utilized their speed to get by a slower Loadholt. Robinson would look really nice between Jake Long and Jake Grove (The Two Jakes).
I think Ronnie Brown prefers running to the left side and these guys could open up holes a truck could drive through.

Problem with Grove is in the last 80 games he's only started in 46 only once in his five seasons has he started all 16 games. He has real injury issues.

I'm very interested to see how the contract is broken down. I still think Miami drafts a C, but probably in the later rounds. I know Miami has spoken to Cecil Newton of Tennessee State.

Just some food for thought, but if the Grove deal is backloaded, or front loaded even, there may be a point when he's a cheap cut if we have drafted another C at some point. Not advocating it, but given Grove's age and injury history, I'd bet $ on this regime protecting themselves in that avenue.

I sure hope he's a cap friendly cut, I hope these guy's learned form the Ernest Wilford signing. However sometimes you're forced to do things you wouldn't normally do to get help where you need the help. There wasn't a lot out there in the way of Centers. Miami had to do something. Who knows what the draft will bring but we still have a bunch of needs.

I think right now we're just a little better than we were at the end of 08, not exactly where I was hoping we'd be at this point. I think if this coaching staff is going to build through the draft we need to be patient cause it's gonna take a while.

Exactly...

Agreed. They said when they first got here that 2010 was the target year. Last year shocked them just as much as us fans I think. Call me crazy, but based of this regime's draft strategies, I wouldn't be shocked if they still drafted a C on the first day of the draft.

On the other hand, if they feel solid enough with Grove and Satele or Grove and Alleman, they might have freed up a pick or two to try and move up if need be for someone they've targeted.
