Although rookie guard Drew Mormino was believed to be vying for the starting left guard spot with Chris Liwienski, there he was playing right guard in practice today. Huh? Also, rookie Tala Esera was playing left guard next to his former Hawaii teammate and fellow Samoan starting center Samson Satele. Satele seems confident that he will hold onto the starting spot. Cam Cameron commented on the kid's smarts after practice.

Cam said Mormino needs another year of strength n conditioning

Where did you read that? Isnt he in a battle with Liweinski for the LG spot. So does this mean the Esera might battle Liweinski, since he was seeing time at the spot today. BTW I have rad alot of articles and I have listenend to the Press Conferences and I have not heard Cam say anything about Mormino.

He said it right about the time they moved Mormino back to 2nd string. I recall reading it also.

Then why hasnt no one said anything about it till now. The talk is Mormino will challenge Liweinski and if recall Cam saying anything it was him praising the kid. I still think the kid will challenge, and if not him Esera has been seeing alot of time with the second unit at G. We will see what happens, but to my knowledge Mormino will be challenging Liweinski.

Since only the rookies are in camp right now, maybe that had something to do with shuffling them around a bit.

He didn't say he wouldn't challenge Liwinski. He said Mormino could use another year of strength and conditioning. What that means is that Cameron feels that even if Mormino wins the job, his upside for this season is probably pretty limited. It also means that if Miami had a legitimate LG on the roster Mormino would probably spend the season on the practice squad or inactive most of the year.

Im sorry, but I have to disagree with you. You dont draft a guy in the 6 round to stick him on the practice squad. Especially while Toledo cant get healthy and has been moved to Tackle. We dont have any depth at the G position. My opinion is Esera will backup Hadnot, he was backing him up during the OTA and the job is his to lose. Stevenson has been seeing time at C with the third team, he is on the outs. Another guy we signed and might get released is Rosenthal who has not been seen since the OTAs. He along with Stevenson were seeing time with the third team.

While I agree you don't spend a 6th to put a guy on the practice squad, it could happen if he sucks. Although here, without seeing Mormino play anything yet, I suspect he might start off the season backing someone up at LG. Just pure speculation. Liewinski might have the shaky head start there.

I have a good feeling about Mormino starting, I might be wrong but I have a good feeling about the kid.

This guy will NOT START this year unless there is a injury,he's is way to small, look at the pic's of him he's to small to be a gaurd,he needs a year or 2 in the weight program. If he starts at Guard then we will never be able to run the ball. Now if they want to play him at center then his smallness wouldn't really matter. Everybody's all on his sh-t because they started him for a few plays in mini-camp. I also don't want a rookie starting next to V. Carey when he's making the switch to LT,he has enough to worry about,he doesn't need to be worrying about a small rookie making mistakes next to him and trying to over compinsate for the rook's mistake's. I do hope he can become a starter for us just not this year.

Mormino is not too small to play guard. He may not be strong enough right now but at 6'3" 300, he is not too small to play the position.

Two of the guards many want to see him in Miami are Alan Faneca and Pete Kendall. Both are in the 6'5" 305 range. It's not always about size but strength and technique as well.

Not all 6th round picks pan out their rookie season, its not that far fetched.

Read what I said again. If Miami had a legitimate guard on their roster... That would mean one more player on the depth chart, pushing everyone else back one. In that event they might keep Liwinski as a back-up because of his experience and versitility, and Mormino would either be inactive most of the year, or put on the practice squad depending on what they think they could carry on the roster.

As for not drafting a guy in the 6th round to put on a practice squad, it's not that uncommon. 6th round guys are often projects to begin with. PK Sam was a 5th rounder, and he's spent time on the practice squad. Dan Stevenson was a 6th round pick last year, and has spent time on both New England and Miami's practice squads.
