Heck, when I floated the idea that we could use Ronnie at FB in the same backfield with Ricky, there were quite a few people here who thought he wasn't big enough to play the position.

Ronnie weighs 233.

Sammy Morris weighs 218.

Weight aside I'm pretty sure Morris played FB when he was with the Bills.

Sammy Morris has expierence and I like him on the field hes a good player and he makes plays. He avg 4 yards a carry as our HB last year behind that O-line.

How much did Morris weigh when he played FB for the Bills? Maybe he's lost weight since then. I don't know of any 218-pound fullbacks in the NFL. Hell, Cadillac Williams weighs 217. These guys' primary job is to slam up against guys who weigh 240 on average (NFL LBs).

Patriots FB pat pass is like 220...weight doenst mean much.
Exactly! Playing full back is about lead blocking and blitz pickup, it also helps that Sammy Morris can catch pretty well.

I think what this signals more than anything else is that we're going to start throwing more short passes to the backs rather than these bombs to the WRs that rarely get completed. Maybe Saban talked to Linehan and told him he wanted more short passing, Linehan said, "well get me a FB who can catch," and Saban responded by cutting Evans and putting Morris at FB. Who knows.

Morris isn't all that fluid of a pass catcher if you ask me, he's no Mike Sellers or anything...but I think they're finding out that Vermeil was sort of right in putting ricky and ronnie in the same backfield doesn't work unless one of them can block like a fullback. Ronnie's a decent pass blocker but he's no Lorenzo Neal there, so they're seeing 8 men in the box and no point of running out of that formation, which is making it easier to defend the pass out of the formation.

But I don't see how putting Morris at FB is going to make this any better. Can he possibly lead-block better than Ronnie weighing 15 pounds less? And if Morris isn't as good a pass-catcher as Ronnie, won't we be even easier to defend with 8 in the box? This is basically taking Vermeil's observation and doing the same thing with more ill-suited personnel involved.

On 5 to 8 plays per game just to keep the defense honest up the middle of the field when he and Ricky are in the same backfield. They were in an I-formation against the Chiefs for a play.

We just signed Darian Barnes. He weighs in at 241lbs. Maybe Morris's role wont be expanding much afterall. If we want a good blocking FB, where is Jamar Martin? I thought he did a very good job for us before he was cut.
