Hope to make this short....
Denver- Five (98,97,89,87 and 86). Defensive avg rank points allowed in all 5 season was # 7. Games in seasons allowing 21+ ppg was 28 (record of 15-13 in those games).
NE- Four (03, 01, 96 and 85). Defensive avg rank points allowed in all 4 seasons was # 7. Games in seasons allowing 21+ ppg was 23 (record of 12-11 in those games).
SF- Four (94, 89, 88, and 84). Defensive avg rank points allowed in all 4 seasons was # 4. Games in seasons allowing 21+ ppg was 21 (record of 14-7 in those games).
Buffalo- Four (93, 92, 91, and 90). Defensive rank points allowed in all 4 seasons was # 11. Games in seasons allowing 21+ ppg was 22 (record of 11-11 in those games).
Dallas- Three (95, 93, and 92). Defensive avg rank points allowed in all 3 seasons was # 3. Games in seasons allowing 21+ ppg was 13 (record of 5-8 in those games).
Giants- Three (00, 90, and 86). Defensive avg rank points allowed in all 3 seasons was # 2. Games in seasons allowing 21+ ppg was 7 (record was 3-4).
It seems that total points allowed in season has a rational excuse for how good is a defensive unit. But, IMO,a great defense can be defined as, how many games can you hold a team to less than 3 TD's. Usually a good defensive team will keep those games to a minimum. This will help an average scoring team to win more games.
What I see in this data is that a defensive unit has to limit itself to give no more than 6 games of 21+ points in the season, and a ranking of around # 7, to make it to the big dance.
I know that there will be other opinions about this data, So please add to them....
