most needed upgrades in order

It doesn't matter to me what order they are in as long as they take steps to address all of them in the next year or two. But one thing I will say is if they want the fans to start having faith in them this year they'd better add a new QB by the end of April. If they do it in FA, I would probably rather go with Flynn than Manning, but thats just me. I just do not have faith that Manning will be who he was the last time we saw him, and then he'll be gone in a year or two and we'll be right back where we started. Philbin says he wants to take steps and lay a foundation for a team that can be competitive over a long period of time; I guess we'll see if that's true or if they're in win now mode.

But, either Manning or Flynn would likely be an upgrade.

I'm not referring to depth players. I'm asking what starting positions in order do you think would be the biggest upgrades over what we currently have?

my opinion=

1. Offensive Right Tackle...I think we become a whole lot better even with an average right tackle
2. Safety...If we keep Bell our starters will still be below average. If Bell leaves we will have the worst tandem in the NFL.
3. Defensive End...Even more so if we switch to a 4-3. We need a pass rusher on the other side. Super bowl teams hit the QB. End of story
4. Tight End...Fasano is ok but we need a playmaker. New England has 2. It works
5. Running Back...While Bush had a good year he is also injury prone and Thomas is still pretty unproven. In today's NFL good teams have 2 starting RB's.

For the record I know a lot of you will think I'm crazy for not putting the QB position in the top 5. While I think an upgrade at QB would be great....I think that Moore is top 15 or better while guys like Columbo, Misi, Fasano, Thomas, Jones are not. Therefor making them bigger upgrades/bigger improvements. Watcha think fellas?
Another Spin off thread... i hope during the season people don't just start copying and pasting my gametime power rankings just for attention...

I do agree with OP, that if you judge Matt Moore on last years performance, going into next year, QB is not the no.1 priority........................but, for the long term success of this franchise QB is THE only priority.

With Andrew Luck no.1, Robert Griffin in my mind is worth trading the entire draft for. If there was no Andrew Luck this year, his value would be even greater, so I say bite the bullet, get into no.2, get the franchise QB and build an offense around him. When you consider Bush is only 26, Long and Marshall 27, Pouncey 22, Bess 26 & Hartline 25, we have at least 4-5 years to build a basis for a superb offense.

Moore is a top 15 QB. That's not really debatable. Top 15 is not good enough though. Your QB has to be a top 5 guy or else you should always be looking to upgrade.

DL wise... IF we do go to a 40 front. The DL I'd very much like to see is

LDE Odrick
LDT Langford
RDT Starks
RED Wake

I'd be happy with that. Just have to find a Mike with Dansby and Burnett on the outside.

That wouldn't work, neither guy is able to handle strong side run penetration, they are light weight and more equipped to handle backside pursuit due to their speed and athletisim. A strongside OLB has to be able to hold penetration when a team has a designed power/lead run play going directly at him 7 out 10 times a running play.

The 3 out of 10 times is when the other LB's should clean up behind him.

moore was top 15 last year but its not like he has a track record. i dont think moore is one of the best 15 qbs in league and i doubt most people do

the most important position in the game and the one that gets you over the hump the most is nowhere in the top 5 on this list...unbelievable

IF

Peyton Manning is acquired, IMO we go all out on OL. #1 pick draft, and top of the list in FA acquisitions.

We need other areas S, TE, DE, another quality WR but fortifying the OL and keeping Manning clean and healthy should be our #1 priority. A healthy Manning ? ...a great coach and staff ? .....scratching my head, Is it possible our luck has finally change...........

The top five positions of need are:
  1. QB
  2. another pass rusher
  3. deep threat WR
  4. ball hawk free safety
  5. right tackle

1. qb (peyton manning)
2. Left guard (carl nicks)
3. pass rusher (courtney upshaw)
4. fs ( markelle martin)
5. Playmaking te( ladrius green)
6. wr
I like this with one substitution -- Flynn instead of Manning. Peyton is just too risky now.

Nice post. My order would be very different, though.

1. QB -- It's a qb driven league. We are in the same division with the Patriots so we have to be great not good.
2. Pass Rusher -- DE or OLB opposite Wake. Got to pressure the qb or you have no hope.
3. RT -- Pretty apparent. Miami wins 3 more games with a competent RT.
4. TE -- Agree with you big time here. This unit needs a major overhaul.
5. Safety -- Safety play gets better with a pass rusher.
6. WR --- We need someone better opposite Marshall.
7. RG --- Could be okay here if we sign someone like Nicks.
8. RB -- Agree with you here. This could actually be a higher need.
9. CB -- Smith is okay, but could use a ballhawk opposite Davis

Bogus thread.... if you don't start with a QB. Then TE. PR, Safety.
