MY 4,000th post rant: HOLDOUTS

I agree and disagree with your post. Some players like Hines Ward and Donovan Darius have consistently put up great numbers for years and have been told their contract will be restructured, etc. but they still haven't been taken care of.

On the other hand, Terrell Owens forced himself out of San Fran, but not necessarily to the highest paying team, he wanted to play for a contending team. So after publicly stating he refuses to play for Baltimore, he signs with Philadelphia, knew what he was signing, and a year later is complaining again. He's a piece of garbage, I agree with you.

I don't know why you guys agree with Antonio Gates though. The guy did have a great year, key term being "a", as in one. Let the guy show some consistency before he sucks the rest of the cap room out of San Diego.

Well I tend to disagree. Hines Ward is one of the best recievers in football and he is making NOTHING compared to others at his position. I think booker and DT both make more than him. Gates had a great year last year and deserves to be rewarded.

Look at it like this. You take a job in whatever field you are in for 50,000 a year. You have a great year...gain high praise from your bosses, and do a lot better than other people in your work that make more money than you. Aren't you going to want a raise?

You can make the argument that its football and its a lot of money, and thats very fair. But I can see where some of these guys are coming from.

Congrats on the 4,000th post...i hope to make it there one day soon!
As long as it works both ways, play poorly and your boss should be allowed to give you a pay cut.;)

You know why these guys holdout?....because they dont want to do two-a-day workouts in the summer sun.

Agreed. And I dont give a damn about how these players could be cut at any time and they have worked very hard to get to that point or that the owners make so much money so the players deserve so much money because of that. These selfish players need to realize that without the owners giving them an opportunity to make this money they have zero chance at making the kind of money they make doing anything else. I for one dont give a damn who is playing for the Miami Dolphins as long as there is a Miami Dolphins. If the best players in the world dont want to play because they arent being paid enough thats just fine with me as long as somebody wants to play for whatever kinda money the owners want to pay the players. Bottom line is the players need the owners to make the kind of money they are paying them. The owners dont need the players because they could find players anywhere to play. If we had to take the arena league players on NFL rosters because the players went on strike I would still watch the NFL. Just because they wouldnt be the best players in the world doesnt make it not football. Its still football. So let the players holdout and not make any money at all and go and get a job like the majority of us regular joe's.

I don't agree that the fans would still watch no matter who plays. Not at current prices anyway. That's where the owners are stuck They know they need to put the best players in the world on the field. If not, who will go and watch them? Who will buy the jerseys? Who will pay $8 for beer? If the owners decided to send out scrubs in place of TO and Ward, they would lose fans.

IMO owners need the players just as much as the players need the owners. It works both ways. The reality is without either the players or the owners, there would be no NFL.

Here is the NFL.com story on gates

http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/SD/8747745

Says he is an exclusive rights free agent, he just doesnt want to sign 380,000 1 yr tender. He has no current contract he just wants to stay in SD, just not for 380 thousand. And doesnt want to regret not getting a good contract now while he is signing, somthing TO should have done.

For the amount of money they get they should be outside sweatin all day! I sure as heck would for that money!

Then stop watching football. Jeeze.

Guys are always going to go after theirs, and, it's all about leverage and timing.

Damn. Some of you people are the biggest babies....ever.

Anyone who's crying like a little girl about guys signing to make _______ team better, at thier own expense. They could be crippled tomorrow....Or dead. It's a hard game.

It never ceases to amaze me how people who sit on the couch eating cheetos pass judgement on guys that work thier whole lives to reach a place, and, then, try to maximize it.

Grow up.

Calm down man! We're not crying they're signing, we're saying they already signed and should stick to that agreement. It's called honoring your contract! I don't blame them for what they make, I blame them for getting greedy. As for getting crippled, there are lots of jobs where you can get crippled or die(firefighters, cops, army) but they don't get near the millions these players get? Is that fair?!

Happy 4000th...

The difference here is that these guys at the minimum make what, $350,000. A lot of people don't consider it underpaid. If you bide your time, continue to do your job for a number of years like most real people do, then you get the raise. If you sign a long-term contract, you have to know that that's what it's going to be.

I know that they can be cut at any time, but what would a lot of these guys be doing if they didn't have football?

Bottom line is getting the most right now. You can complain all you want about holdouts. If they signed a contract and, had garunteed money, that'd be one thing. They don't. They can get cut and, NADA!

This is a big boy world.

It's a big boy game.

Learn to deal, or don't watch if it disgusts you so much.

It's all a part of the game.

Oh...Ok...Let's compare firefighters/cops/Service to football players...

I'm laughing 'cause I WAS in the Army.

If people wore MY last name on thier backs, and, paid a gazzillion dollars to get a BDU jacket authorized by the Army, I'd be a little upset, granted, but, I don't think that ever happened...

Ok..My wife wore my BDU jacket somtimes...But she got it free.

You are the upmost in polyanna-dom if you think you can honestly, in the same breath, compare cops/firefighters/Army and ball players in the same breath.

It's apples and oranges.

Grow up.

I'd watch it if I were you. You're scraping awfully close to a breach of the TOS with unnecessary judgement quirks like that^

Well, I reckon they can ban me if that's what they want to do.

We as fans can lay whatever kind of lambasteing, insulting, degrading insults on players that we like but, we can't take remotely bad things said in our general direction AFTER we make said comment?

Whatever.

If I'm banned, it's probably for the good.

I stand by what I posted.
