MY 4,000th post rant: HOLDOUTS

Tim Euhus of the Bills, who would've been like there 3rd string tight end, had Kevin Everett been healthy, I believe is scheduled to make more money than Antonio Gates, and people think thats fair compensation for a guy who is one of the top players at his position? A NFL career is short, and players need to get as much money as possible while they're in the game. They signed the contract talk is absolute BS, the contract is not guranteed, teams can cut players whenever they want. If anyone believes Tim Euhus is the same caliber player as Gates and should be compensated the same amount is crazy. Hines Ward is the 37th highest paid wideout in the game, and has consistently played at a pro bowl level, are there 37 wideouts in the league better than Ward? There's not one in the Afc East who is better than him. Most people who make average pay can't understand how atheletes can holdout, when they already make millions, but it's not like the NFL owners are losing money.

Agreed. And I dont give a damn about how these players could be cut at any time and they have worked very hard to get to that point or that the owners make so much money so the players deserve so much money because of that. These selfish players need to realize that without the owners giving them an opportunity to make this money they have zero chance at making the kind of money they make doing anything else. I for one dont give a damn who is playing for the Miami Dolphins as long as there is a Miami Dolphins. If the best players in the world dont want to play because they arent being paid enough thats just fine with me as long as somebody wants to play for whatever kinda money the owners want to pay the players. Bottom line is the players need the owners to make the kind of money they are paying them. The owners dont need the players because they could find players anywhere to play. If we had to take the arena league players on NFL rosters because the players went on strike I would still watch the NFL. Just because they wouldnt be the best players in the world doesnt make it not football. Its still football. So let the players holdout and not make any money at all and go and get a job like the majority of us regular joe's.

I agree too, and want to add that if you look at the whole picture, regarding a teams' right to cut a player, the teams more often than not, get the short end of the stick with players and contracts. There are many more "underachievers" getting paid millions off of something they did last year or several years before...Look at draft picks...anyone recall Ryan Leif ??

Lately the big stories in the NFL are involving contract holdouts (Hines Ward, TO, Antonio Gates, etc.). Does anyone else think that contract holdouts are utterly ridiculous?

Reason 1: These players have signed contracts to play a given amount of time for a given amount of money, how would they react if a team told them that instead of making 7 mil this year they will be making 500,000? Why even have the player sign the contract? It seems to only be legally binding for the team unless that player decides to "find the truth" in India, but that's a different case.

Reason 2: They are still making VERY good money for playing football. They work less then 1/2 of the year, are looked up to by children everywhere (regardless of how deserving they are), and make exorbitant amounts of money for doing this. Having a pro football career is a privelage, the lucky few who are blessed with the athletic ability to do so should be happy making 50,000 per year.

This is why my favorite non-dolphins player is Ed Reed. Despite being the best defensive player in the NFL, Reed makes around 600,000 this year. He's not holding out, demanding a trade, bad-mouthing the coach, being a media whore or even bashing the Ravens for not giving him a new contract. He loves playing the game and he is very good at it. Unlike many NFL players in the age of Drew Rosenhaus, Reed has not lost touch with regular people like us. He also founded the "Eye of the Hurricane Foundation" to help underprivelaged kids in his hometown of St. Rose, Louisiana.

You had me sold as soon as I saw the avatar!!! Carlin RULES!!!!!

There is a salary cap. So as long as the NFL owner is paying close to the max of the salary cap, then it is more like taking money from other players rather than from the owners.

Anyone who's crying like a little girl about guys signing to make _______ team better, at thier own expense. They could be crippled tomorrow....Or dead. It's a hard game.

It never ceases to amaze me how people who sit on the couch eating cheetos pass judgement on guys that work thier whole lives to reach a place, and, then, try to maximize it.

Grow up.

I know kids that play for free no they actually pay to play. Thousands of kids in highschool, college and pop warner play for free and could be paralized on any given play. I played with against a kid in pop warner who actually broke his neck. Who payed his doctor bill???

Grow up.

I don't agree that the fans would still watch no matter who plays. Not at current prices anyway. That's where the owners are stuck They know they need to put the best players in the world on the field. If not, who will go and watch them? Who will buy the jerseys? Who will pay $8 for beer? If the owners decided to send out scrubs in place of TO and Ward, they would lose fans.

IMO owners need the players just as much as the players need the owners. It works both ways. The reality is without either the players or the owners, there would be no NFL.

Your right maybe the NFL wouldnt be as big as it is now but it would still exist. Any fan who likes football would still watch football. Would you never watch football again just because the best in the world arent playing the sport. I myself love football I watch highschool, college and the pro's including Arena league. So maybe they couldnt sell $8 beers but they would still have fans in the stadium and watching on TV. The owners didnt get rich by charging 8 dollars for a beer they got rich in some other form of business that allowed them to own a football team and pay players millions.
