No doubt, we’re building a big-time POWER offense. And in preparation for that, I expect another OT taken at 2a (or certainly by 2b). Once this is done, our radical new OL could look like:
LT – Long
LG – Carey
C – Satele
RG – Smiley
RT – Cherilus or Collins or Nicks (all three big boys with plenty of chops for RT)
The combo of Long and Carey on the left side would be an impressive running game steamroller, and put our two best athletes together with Samson in the middle. Smiley matched with another power guy and you’ve got (suddenly) perhaps the BEST young OL in the league!
Could you imagine THAT after the crap OL we’ve had around here year after year!
For those who question Carey at LG, the move has to do with employing your talent to maximum advantage. This draft is LOADED with OT talent, and believe it or not, there are many who feel Carey's BEST position is at G. That doesn't mean he's not a solid T, but he could be ELITE as a G matched with someone like Long and Samson.
Even if we don’t move Carey to G, we need more depth at OT --- which gives us a lot of versatility across the front as well. Bottom line, if we can get another 1st round grade OT at 2a then I'd love to see us load up on the big guys. One way or another, TS will find the best combination.
Others in the power game mix:
Mauia – a potentially monster sledgehammer lead blocker, this dude has a nasty demeanor, and flat-out knocks the snot out of people. With one year under his belt, he’s got the potential to be one of the best in the game as a power lead blocker.
Ronnie Brown – if he returns to form (the zillion dollar question), he’s one of the most gifted physical backs in the game. Match him with a dominant power OL and supporting cast and defenses will hate playing us.
Wilford – a big physical WR who doesn’t mind getting nasty in the running game; fits right into the power game mold.
Mormino – known as a nasty dude, he’s been bulking and could prove to be an excellent back-up and/or solid player. Bottom line, he’s YOUNG with lots of potential, which fits right into the mold for this OL
