I watched on ESPN since we only get NFL Network in HD during the season (why, IDK, the cable company is lame).

1 - Virginia Tech Tribute. Every single person who booed Vick and Hall during that opening tribute to the VT shooting victims should be ashamed of themselves. I cannot stand Vick just as much as the next guy, but they weren't up there to promote or pay tribute to Vick, they were up there for the victim's and their families, and since Vick and Hall and Smith were famous former VT players, they were invited to pay their respects along with coach Beamer and comissioner Goodell. Booing Vick, and even hall a little, was absolutely classless.

2 - Cleveland Browns Pick. Everyone pretty much knew it was CJ or Russell to the Raiders, and I was thinking CJ or Gaines Adams to the Lions (or at least in the #2 spot, depending on if a TB trade happened), but Cleveland had me scared to death for the entire 15 minutes. Hell, I had been scared of them taking Quinn since the NCAA season ended. Those 15 minutes were absolute HELL, and when Goodell walked to the podium I just put my face in my hands and waited for heartbreak when he called Quinn's name and there goes our best shot in forever at a franchise QB. The SECOND I heard him say "Left Tackle" I must've jumped 30 feet in the air. I figured we were GOLDEN, Quinn was OURS, go ahead Mueller, get on the phone with the Redskins.

3 - Minesotta Vikings Pick. I'll admit it, when we didn't trade to six I became slightly nervous. I never really thought the Vikings would take Quinn as they took Jackson in round 2 last year, trading up to do so, and all reports are they like him there, but you just never know, so I was a bit nervous, but I was pretty sure they'd go Peterson since he was still there, and they did. Again, as with the browns pick, I was ecstatic, as the Falcons CLEARLY don't need a QB (well I think the do because Vick is crap, but they don't seem to think so) and we were next.

4 - Our Pick. Here I am, biggest smile on my face, best mood I've been in since I can't even remember how long, just so happy that we finally get our guy, and didn't have to give up ANYTHING for him. I knew we'd take the entire 15 minutes, everyone usually does that early. I took that time to let it sink in that we finally got our guy, a QB worthy of being called a franchise QB. I was basking in it. Then here comes Goodell, and I sit forward on the couch in anticipation, what I've waited for for the past 8 years is finally seconds away from becoming official. He reads the card and kind of pauses after he says "with the 9th pick in the draft te Miami Dolphins select....", almost like even HE was shocked at what he was about to say, "....Ted Ginn Jr, WR, Ohio State." I can't even describe my feelings when he said that. It was seriously one of those moments that felt like a bad dream. I was speechless for a good 5 minutes, I literally had no idea what to say or do, I just could not believe it. I was stunned that we passed on Quinn, especially given Cam's backround with QBs, plus our QB coach working with Quinn in Arizona and those two plus Mueller and the organization itself being in love with Quinn, it was basically a dream scenerio and we passed, so that was the shock, the anger came with who we picked instead. This isn't all about Quinn either, there were other guys I would have been happy with in round 1. Landry would have been great, or even Patrick Willis, or trade down and take a CB or WR. The thing that sucks is the guy we needed at a position we definately needed fell righ to us and we passed. If he was gone already that'd be fine, nothing we can do, but a guy EVERYONE raved about for us for the longest time, fans, coaches, front office, draft "experts", football analysts, EVERYONE had Quinn being perfect for us, then he falls and we pass, I just can't grasp it, and that's what shocks/angers me, because he was THERE, without having to trade up, and we passed.

5 - The Fallout. After we passed on Quinn and took Ginn, I tried to justify it by making myself think maybe we were using Ginn as trade bait and someone else would grab Quinn and we'd swap. Or I was thinking it's clear Quinn will fall WAY down now, so maybe we wanted to wait and then trade Ginn with someone for their pick and take Quinn later than #9 so he'd be a lot cheaper and therefore less of a risk. THEN he fell into the 20s and I started wondering if we might package our two 2nd-rounders for someone's 1st rounder and move up and take him, giving us a WR AND QB. However, none of it appeared to be a possibility the longer he was on the board, and then as soon as the reports came in the Cleveland was calling around I knew it was only a matter of time before they got him, and they did. It was officially over at that point, and yet STILL would not sink in, hell, it's the next day and still hasn't sunk in. It felt (feels) like 2001 all over again. That year I wanted Brees just as much as I wanted Quinn this year (well I've wanted Quinn since he may have come out LAST year) and he fell right into our laps and we passed on him, and he turned out to be great while the guy we took instead busted. Same thing last year with the Brees or Culpepper situation. We AGAIN passed on Brees and AGAIN took a guy who instead busted. This situation feel no different.

6 - Brady Quinn. What a rough day for him. I feel bad for the guy, but I also think it had a great ending for him. Here's a guy who EVERYONE raved about last year, would have been the #1 coming out, yet he decided to stay, not for reasons Matt Leinert did (the popularity and wanting to win another title) but to learn even more from a great coach, and that shows me a lot about this kid's drive, character, and dedication to the game. Then suddenly he goes into the season under a microscope, and even though he is still playing great, somehow he starts to slip, because everyone is ignoring the good things he does and magnifying the bad (just like Leinert). I think the entire process of "evaluation" by "professionals" is flawed, and Quinn is just the most recent example. If Russell had stayed in school he wouldn't be a #1 pick next year, he wouldn't even be in round one, and he SHOULDN'T have been this year, but it's a case of having a huge jump in stock and he took advantage of it, probably because he knew he'd only slip next year. Brady Quinn isn't Aaron Rodgers, and now he will forever be compared to him. Rodgers was a Tedford QB, everyone knows they are college stars and NFL duds, and that's why he fell. Quinn, if you HAD to group him like that, would be a Weis QB, and Weis is a NFL coach, who runs a Pro-Style offense, which Quinn excelled in, and which Tom Brady won 3 Super Bowls in. I'm not going to go back into the entire "Quinn pros and cons" debate, because it is now a moot point, but I will always think he is a top 3 talent until he proves otherwise. I think it had a great ending for what was CLEARLY a tough day for him though. Yeah, he lost millions upon millions of dollars, but in the end he STILL went to his hometown team, which has been his favorite team since he was a little kid, and he got an excellent OT to watch his back, plus he goes to a pretty good RB this year, and he has Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow to throw to, so it's a pretty good situation for him.

7 - Ted Ginn Jr. It will take me a LONG time to come around to this pick. I am a diehard Dolphins fan, but there are picks/signings/players that I just don't like or approve of, and that doesn't make me less of a fan. I'm not going to root against him (THAT would make me a bad fan), but I don't have to like him or buy his jersey, and that doesn't make me any less of a fan (for those of you in other threads who are saying people who don't like the Ginn pick aren't "real" fans). First of all, I was never a fan of Ginn to begin with. I think he got away with a lot in college that he won't in the NFL, and that made him appear better than he really is. He doesn't run good routes, he does drop passes, he isn't physical, and he's TINY. 5-11, 175lbs will get you KILLED in the NFL by a S or LB as you are stretched out for a pass. His sloppy routes make me view him as a Randy Moss, a one dimensional WR who only runs deep stuff but can't help anywhere else. As far as him being physical and being able to beat the press, I don't see it. All of his supporters say "Look at him beating Aaron Ross and Leon Hall and tell THEM he can't beat the press" yet if you look at the tapes, he just runs BY the press, and that isn't what I mean. When I say he can't beat the press (and when all the scouts and everyone else say it) they mean should the DB make the contact or lock on, he isn't physical enough to break away, and then he is rendered useless. On top of all that, here we are FOUR MONTHS LATER and he STILL has not recovered from an ANKLE SPRAIN, and he won't be in the May camp over 2 weeks from now. Plus, Cam talked about him as a Punt Returner in that little announcememnt speech, didn't even mention him as a WR once. You don't draft PRs in round 1, especially at #9, and that is all I have ever viewed him as, Daunte Hall v2.0. You can sign PRs as UDFAs for cryin' out loud. Not to mention #9 was too high for him. I think after my initial shock of not taking Quinn, the ANGER part came that it was Ginn at #9 and not taking someone else or trading DOWN and taking either Ginn or one of the DBs. I have the same ominous feeling towards Ginn and this pick that I did when we signed Culpepper. Everyone raved about him and the trade and how he would save this franchise and all along, as soon as his name was thrown into the mix, I had a horrible feeling, and I was one of the most outspoken people toward him on these boards, and those feelings turned out to be legit. I have that same feeling now about Ginn, and I have since his name was thrown into the mix of possible round 1 picks for us. I hope I am wrong, but I'm just putting it out there that I have a horrible feeling about this.

8 - The Analysts. Anybody else think these guys are a joke? As soon as Brady Quinn was there for our pick they went NUTS over him. Touting his play and saying he is the perfect fit and a steal at #9 and how the talk of his accuracy and his big game play is a non-issue, and then when we passed on him the SAME guys said his accuracy is a huge concern because he just isn't accurate, and his play in big games was a red flag for scouts because it shows he probably gets rattled when under pressure. It was a 100% contradiction to what the said one pick earlier, and it made them look stupid on national TV. The biggest offender was the guy in the tan suit. I wanna say it was Jaworski, but I can't remember, there were two guys wearing tan suits, and I can't remember who the other was and which said it, but one of the two guys in the tan suits said it .

9 - Calvin Johnson/Gaines Adams NON-Trade. Anyone else shocked by this? For the LONGEST time all we heard was Tampa Bay is infatuated with Calvin Johnson, and then Detroit loves Gaines Adams, and then Detroit takes CJ (best player or not, do they REALLY need another WR?) and TB takes Adams and everyone is thinking it's to trade with each other, and yet it never happens, what's up with that?

10 - John Beck. Admittedly I did not study him as much as I did Russell, Quinn, and Stanton, as by the time he (and Trent Edwards) started rising up and getting added to the mix, it already seemed pretty clear that Quinn was our guy (keyword being SEEMED I guess), so I don't know to much about him. I know a lot of people here liked him, and the highlight video I saw looked pretty good, although it's a HIGHLIGHT video, so naturally it would. I'd like to see a video breakdown of both his pros AND cons to help me get a better read on him. I just hope the Ginn/Beck combo turns out better than the Quinn/Rice (or another 2nd round WR) could have. He does seem like a charismatic guy though. His age concerns me only because it may shorten the time we have a great QB (if he turns out to be something), as he should have already been in the league for 6 years (if he is the same age as Brees, who entered in the 2001 draft).

11 - Samson Setele. I like this pick. He is a guy who I had on a few of my early mocks. I'm still curious as to why we went C here when OT and OG are bigger needs and there were still OTs and OGs on the board here (I believe Harris from ND was there and Beekman from BC was also there), but I like Satele. He can also play G so I guess it's almost a dual pickup (although he can;t play both at the same time, lol).

12 - Lorenzo Booker. Maybe I'm just blind here but I didn't get this pick. I understand Ronnie could use a backup, or even a 3rd down/change of pace guy, but given that we have some serious ned at CB/S still, plus OT and OG, I don't get RB this high. RB isn't as important as those 4 positions, and a quality guy could be found later on. Nate Ilaoa is a BRUISER (5-8, 245lbs, 4.7 40) who has great agility, can run over guys, and has excellent hands. He is a 7th round projection, possibly UDFA, and would make an excellent 3rd down/change of pace back. I'm sure there are others too. Also, since we decided to go RB in round 4, why didn't we take Michael Bush? He was a top round 1 talent before the injury, which he is already 90-95% back from (and if we can spend the #9 overall on a WR who is only 75% we can spend round 4 on a RB who is 95%) and he is versatile. Has great size to be a bruiser, but has also has the ability to slip into the slot and play WR, and he has great hands as well. All things that would make him a SCARY 3rd down guy, and could even have him split time/carries with Ronnie once he is 100%, or maybe use them both on the field (like Bush and McAllister in New Olreans). Like I said, not sure why we went RB in round 4, and why, if we were going to go RB, we didn't take Bush instead.

13 - Paul Soliai. I know nothing about this guy, as I wasn't really scouting DTs too much this year. According to NFL Draft Countdown, here are his Pros and Cons:

Strengths:
Has fantastic size with a huge frame and terrific bulk...Extremely strong and stout at the point...He is pretty athletic...Moves well and has good range...Can take on multiple blockers...Can really stuff the run...Still developing...Has a ton of upside.

Weaknesses:
Extremely raw and has only played the position for a couple of years...Not much of a pass rusher...Conditioning and stamina are concerns...Runs hot and cold...Is not quick or explosive and lacks a burst...Intelligence / Character may be issues.

Notes:
JUCO transfer from Coffeyville Community College in Kansas where he was a 1st Team All-American offensive guard...Began his career with the Utes as an o-lineman as well...A potential 3-4 nose tackle...He is still far from a finished product but there is big potential here and he has all the physical tools you look for...Boom or Bust.

So all-in-all it sounds like a pretty good pick in terms of potential, but like I said, I can only go on that stuff because I have never seen or even heard of him before we picked him.

I'll post again after we make our last 5 picks with my thoughts on them. So far the draft isn't impressing me as much as I thought it would. I expected BIG things from this draft as we finally had EXTRA picks instead of less than 7 picks, and it wasn't Wanny/Spielmen to make dumb choices or Saban to draft all SEC guys, but so far I have almost felt like those guys are running the show again because some of the picks are shockers (passing on Quinn, taking Ginn too high, taking a RB in the 4th when DB and OL were MUCH bigger needs). I'm not going to say this is a horrible draft, but given that I was expecting it to be my favorite in a LONG time (and not just because of Quinn) and the actual way it's gone, I will say I'm not super pleased.

We feel the same way....other than the center...I don't see one full time starter in the picks.

Well I figured a lot of people were pissed too. This is the first chance I've had to check the boards and I went right to posting my thoughts instead of trying to read every single thread I missed yesterday, as I bet 90% say the same general thing. I tried to write mine out in detail to provoke discussions and maybe keep it all in one place instead of just a bunch of "I can't believe we passed on Quinn" threads or the like.

I agree though, so far Satele seems to be the only full time starter. Ginn I think will be the new Daunte Hall, so I guess he'd technically be a starter, but he'd be pretty absent on the field outside of punt and kick returns. Beck I do not know enough about, but since he only got thrown into the mix in the last week or so I find it hard to believe we "loved him and he was our guy all along" like the coaches/FO want us to think.

We went with Satele that early because (in my opinion) Staley was off the board and Ryan Kahlil had went @ #59 to the Panthers (the previous pick). Kahlil and Satele were obvious 1, 2 at Center depending on your scheme.

At that point, I feel we chose BPA on OLine and didn't believe Satele would last until the 3rd. And it appears, we didn't feel the quality was there @ LT after Staley.

I think that you are missing two things... the intangibles that an addition of Ginn brings into an offense... 4.28.. He is a rocket and must be respected, this will only benefit Chambers... Yes the knock on him is his reluctance to go over the middle (never saw any indication of that) and an inability to beat the press or physical corners. This is something that good coaching can address as well as design plays to free him up (keep him in motion for instance)... he is much more than a punt return specialist.

The second thing is the Booker pick... I was surprised as well but then when I looked at the rationale behind it I'm very impressed. The guys you mentioned are as you described 'Bruisers' but so is Ronnie Brown AND Ricky. They don't represent a true change in pace... Booker is a shifty 'make em miss guy and a true change of pace from the two Bruisers we already employ.

I think Cameron would really like to change the face of our offense and make us far less predictable...
