The favorite Ted Ginn video thread inspired me to make my own thread showcasing my favorite John Beck video.

No, this is not the video of John throwing a 70 yd bomb (somebody really should make a thread for that one! )
Instead, my video of Beck is a highlight video of the 2006 match up of BYU vs. TCU.

Going into this game a lot of people were questioning John’s ability to win a big or close game. The game was at #17 TCU as the Horned Frogs were coming fresh off a victory where they held ranked Texas Tech, which runs a similar offense to BYU, to only 3 points. TCU has a fast defense and is always a tough football team. (TCU won in double overtime the previous year against BYU in a controversial finish where the TCU player appeared to fumble the ball before scoring the winning TD.)

The reason I like this video the most is because, first off, it’s much higher quality than any youtube highlights, and secondly, to me it really was John’s break out game. He displayed his ability to control a game and showcased all his talents and competitive drive in the process. To top it off, John played on two BADLY sprained ankles (Notice the tape around the ankles and just watch him limp at the end of the video). It truly was a gutsy performance by John as he made big play after big play.

After this game sports talk radio personalities in Texas could not stop talking about how good John Beck is. It sparked a huge discussion on whether the Texans should consider drafting him and they went as far as saying that he was better than any QB in the entire Big 12.

A few items worth noting:
  • Look how Beck leads his receivers, usually hitting them in stride, away from the defenders
  • Watch his feet, they are always in the right position to make the throw
  • Check out the pass at 1:58. Can a pass be any more accurate?
  • The pass at 4:30 is an absolutely beautiful touch pass
  • At 5:03 there is another perfectly threaded bullet
  • The last TD pass is just pretty

It's even more impressive because he gets rid of his walker right before he throws the ball.

i've seen him make a lot of good throws. but i really want to see his bad ones. see what happened on them, if they were drops, or poor mechanics, or bad reads. that is what will set him apart. If he can make good throws, and just avoid dumb mistakes (misreads, forcing a throw, etc), then he'll be fine. He doesn't have to be the next Marino. Just has to play smart enough to help our defense win.

bro all those times are off. no passes at 130 or 430

I double checked and those times are right (though I didn't list a pass at 1:30 it was 1:58). Maybe the link isn't working properly(?). If you want to go directly to the site you can click on the TCU game there. (You can also view highlights from most of the games over the past two seasons.)
Here is the link.

According to your profile you are 26 as am I. Beck will turn 26 in August so he is younger than the both of us. I don't know about you, but I don't feel old and feeble in the least bit.
John was on hobbled ankles that game and did use crutches to get around that week so you would be accurate in stating that he got rid of those before throwing the ball.

Right on. Thanks for sharing the vid.

I like what you pointed out. The itermediate passes were sweet. However, I noticed that on a couple of deep throws it looks like the receiver had to wait for the ball. Perhaps injury or pressure prevented stepping fully into the throws, I don't know. Regardless, it looks like he had a solid day against one of the better teams in the country. Here's hoping that he's everything we need at QB.

By the way, here are some of Beck's numbers for that game:
23 of 37 (62%) for 321 yards (14 yards per completion), 3 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions.

Bring on the Beck!

I know its unlikely but it would be great to actually see him play some on the 28 October, instead of watching Grampa Green taking care of the team.

Either way. as long as we are winning i will keep ginning !:D
