My last mock just isn't satisfying me, especially since it's becoming quite clear that Quinn will probably not fall to nine. I've also just seen some new footage and learned some new things about a few players, so now I want to throw out a new hypothetical mock, this one having us trade down with our first pick and move up with our second pick in order to secure three beasts along the OL:

016 - Joe Staley (OT - Central Michigan) *
032 - Ryan Kalil (C - USC) **
047 - Justin Blalock (OG - Texas) *
060 - Kevin Kolb (QB - Houston)
095 - Paul Williams (WR - Fresno State) **
108 - John Wendling (S - Wyoming)
169 - Courtney Brown (CB - Cal Poly) **
181 - Ryan Smith (CB - Florida)
199 - Michael Allan (TE - Whitworth)
219 - Germaine Race (RB - Pittsburg St.)
238 - David Ball (WR - New Hampshire)

* - Obtained via trade with the Green Bay Packers (The 16th and 47th overall picks in exchange for the 9th overall pick - See Note Below)

** - Obtained via trade with the Indy Colts (The 32nd, 95th and 169th overall picks in exchange for the 40th and 71st overall picks - See Note Below)

Note Regarding 1st Trade: Pittsburgh may also be interested in moving up to nine in order to draft Levi Brown. I think it's somewhat more likely the Packers or Giants will try to trade up to secure Adrian Peterson or Marshawn Lynch. If Peterson and Brown fall, I can definitely see us moving down, which is exactly what I would do if Quinn is not available.

Note Regarding 2nd Trade: The Colts do not have a second round pick at the moment, meaning they pick at the end of the first round and then do not choose again until doing so twice during the final five picks on day one. I think, or at least hope, they would be interested in moving down, allowing us to pick up the best center in the draft along with an additional pick late in the fifth round (Note: The Colts already have two picks at the end of both the third and fifth round, so I can definitely see this trade happening with us or somebody else near the top of the second round)

-------------------------

Staley + Kalil + Blalock = Incredible injection of youth and talent along our OL. It wouldn't be sexy, but it doesn't get much better than this. Unfortunately, Blalock may not fall to 47. Unless Tony Ugoh (OT/OG - Arkansas) or Arron Sears (OT/OG - Tennessee) were still on the board, I'd feel comfortable choosing Ben Grubbs (OG - Auburn) or Josh Beekman (OG - Boston College) if Blalock is not available when the 47th pick rolls around. All four prospects would be a solid pick in the middle of the second round IMO.

Kolb is my second favorite QB in the draft, behind only Quinn. He has all of the measurables and intangibles. All he lacks is experience at the upper-echelon level. That said, I can see him becoming a solid starter down the road if he's groomed properly and receives good coaching, something Cameron can and will provide.

Paul Williams would be a nice pick at the end of the third round. He has a lot of potential, and could become a solid starter down the road. I don't think it's time to dump Booker and Chambers, and would really love to have a WR foursome of Booker, Chambers, Williams and Hagan this season.

John Wendling is a beast that I would consider drafting in the third round even. I can only hope and pray he will fall to the top of the fourth. He would probably contribute immediately as a backup and special teamer, and eventually blossom into a solid starter, if not a Pro Bowler. We gotta draft this guy. The more I see and hear about him, the more I fall in love with him. Allen and Wendling would solidify us at safety for years and years.

You can't beat Courtney Brown's measurables. He could become a nice starter down the road with the proper coaching. We gotta take him if he falls this far. I also like Ryan Smith a lot, even though he is very unpopular around here. Sure, he's been timed slow, but the same was said of Zach Thomas and Jerry Rice. The 40-yard dash is not the end all, be all. The guy knows how to play football. This guy produced like crazy last year for the national champions, and I'd really like to add him to provide depth at CB and possibly become our nickelback down the road. He's very underrated and could be a steal.

I like giving Michael Allan and Germaine Race an opportunity. I like their production from last season. They were big time producers at the small school level, and I would like to see if they can replicate it in the NFL. At worst, they'd provide emergency depth this season. I could see either one becoming a solid backup and, in the case of Allan, possibly a starter.

Last but not least, there's David Ball. Sure, he's not a workout warrior and he went to New Hampshire, but there's no denying he set some pretty amazing records. Some say he'll go much sooner than this, and some say he will go undrafted. This late in the draft, what's the difference? I'd take him if he were still on the board just to secure his rights. Who knows, maybe the guy could pack on 40-50 pounds and become a decent receiving TE down the road. He reminds me a lot of Orande Gadsden, and OG was a decent starter even though he was slower than slow. I actually see Ball becoming a decent third or fourth option at WR somewhere down the road...

-------------------------

Obviously it's very difficult to address all of your areas of concern in a single draft. Our defense is aging, but still has some gas left and we certainly have far more pressing issues than LB & DL IMO. I think we can afford to focus on LB & DL next year via free agency and the draft. I'd definitely consider drafting at least two defensive linemen and two linebackers next year. I'd love to spend our first pick on one of the top defensive tackles coming out next year. It sounds like a number of beasts will be available in the first round. There are still some vets out there who we could sign to be one-year depth plugs, too. Yes, we gotta address LB & DL, but I think we can wait one more year...

All and all, I'd be ecstatic after a draft like this, especially if we also traded a 2008 conditional draft pick (Along with Cleo Lemon?) for Trent Green, giving us a QB trio of Culpepper, Green and Kolb this season. Surely one of the three would consistently produce this year, allowing us to compete and keep it close in most every game, with Kolb hopefully becoming our Franchise QB down the road and/or Culpepper regaining his former self...

I can't wait to hear what you guys think...

LOVE IT EXCEPT replace your wide receiver with JL Higgins who is a very good receiver and can return punts and kickoffs as well

I think there is no way Courtney Brown last that long, Brown, Smith and Higgins are better picks, and Barbre is a little known but big time LT. Also, your draft doesn't address DE which is a big void behind Taylor etc.

Here's my (quick) fix to your draft scenario where we have so many more pick (I would probably make some other changes to the later rounds if I spent more time on it).

016 - JAMAAL ANDERSON
032 - JOE STALEY
047 - Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE, Hawaii
060 - TROY SMITH
095 - JOHNNIE LEE HIGGINS
108 - COURTNEY BROWN
169 - ALLEN BARBRE
181 - Ryan Smith (CB - Florida)
199 - Michael Allan (TE - Whitworth)
219 - Germaine Race (RB - Pittsburg St.)
238 - David Ball (WR - New Hampshire)

I love the Jamaal Anderson pick, but there's no way Staley is still available at #32. Alama-Francis is a good prospect but I think we could get him at #60 and take another OL prospect or a QB at #47. I wouldn't pick Troy Smith in the second, but I love Johnnie Lee Higgins in the third.

I'd love for them to be able to move down but in all honesty, it doesn't happen much. If Peterson falls, there could be some bites. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

If the draft did turn out that way, I'd be happy. I'm not as sold on Staley as most are but I love Blaylock. Unfortunately I don't see most of those players slipping to those spots.

O-Line has been a problem for this franchise for the last few years but I think your mock goes a little overboard. I would not be happy with such a heavy investment in O-line at the expense of so many other postions.

I'm going to reconsider the possibility of Quinn falling to us (I can't stop hoping for it to happen), especially since it appears the Raiders may actually go with Calvin Johnson. I'm also going to toss around a trade-down scenario in the third round:

009 - Brady Quinn (QB - Notre Dame)
040 - Ryan Kalil (C - USC) OR Justin Blalock (OG - Texas)
060 - LaMarr Woodley (DE/OLB - Michigan)
088 - John Wendling (S - Wyoming) *
108 - Paul Williams (WR - Fresno St.)
125 - Adam Koets (OT - Oregon St.) *
126 - Courtney Brown (CB - Cal Poly) *
181 - Ryan Smith (CB - Florida)
219 - Michael Allan (TE - Whitworth)
238 - Kasey Studdard (OG - Texas)

* - Obtained via trade with the Saints (Picks 88, 125 & 126 in exchange for picks 71 & 199...Note: The Saints also have pick 123, so it won't be surprising if they look to trade-up to the top of the third round for a coveted prospect)

-------------------------

This would be the ultimate draft for me...I'd love it.

I agree, mainly because I am not at ALL a fan of the first 3 picks being OL.

It certainly wouldn't be a sexy decision, but if all three turned into standout starters it'd be more than worth the investment. That said, I'm on your side with regards to Quinn. He is, by far, my favorite player of the draft. He may be the best QB prospect since Carson Palmer. I'll be ecstatic for months if he somehow falls to us, and I'd certainly be willing to give up the 60th pick to move up in the first round to draft him.

The closer the draft gets the more I just wanna say pull the damn trigger and do whatever we have to in order to get him, even if it means moving up to #2 so we don't even give Cleveland a chance to consider him.

I REALLY think we need this guy, and what better position will we ever be in to get a franchise QB? We are sitting at 9 with PLENTY of extra picks to use as power to move up, not to mention we have Culpepper to throw into a deal. Any other time and we'd be giving up picks in future drafts, which is exactly what we DON'T wanna get back into doing again.

We would probably have to give up picks 9, 40, 60 & 71 in order to move up to the second overall pick, assuming we didn't want to deal any 2008 picks. That's way too high of a price to pay, especially when you consider how much of a cap hit we would take for shouldering another second overall pick on our roster (The other being Ronnie Brown, of course).

That said, I'd definitely consider moving up to 4 or 5 in exchange for 9 and 40, and I wouldn't think twice about giving up 9 & 60 in order to get Quinn at 6...

If the Raiders pick Johnson, the Lions pick Thomas and the Browns pick Russell, I see a 55% chance of Quinn falling to us with a 45% chance of the Vikings choosing him instead. The Vikings are the only team after the Browns that I can see considering Quinn, and I don't think anybody would be willing to move in front of us to obtain him. These would likely be the scenarios:

A) We'll move up to four, five or six if we believe Quinn is by far the best prospect available

OR

B) We'll try to move up to four, five or six, but we'll be unable to pull off a trade and therefore be forced to sit tight and let the cards fall as they may

OR

C) We'll have one or two guys ranked about as high as Quinn, and decide to simply let the cards fall where they may and choose Quinn if he's available at nine, or choose whoever it is we have ranked nearly as high as him if he isn't available.

Of course, I'm hoping the "C" scenario plays out with Quinn falling to us. It would be a dream. "A" would also be nice as long as we don't overpay to move up.
