2008 GM - Houston Texans
So, free agency is upon us and the combine is in our rear view mirror... time for my mock draft version 2.0
I'm going to do this two ways. The first will be if we keep all our picks, no trade downs and Jason Taylor is still a Phin. The second will be if we trade JT and then as I expect we move into the latter half of the first round.
Round 1 (#1 overall)
Chris Long, OLB/DE Virginia. Even if we end up signing Pace, I still think we take Chris Long. Bill Parcells loves his linebackers as history has shown. Long is truely a Parcells guy having played his college years with a Parcells' disciple Al Groh as his head coach. You know you're getting a player who will give 110% of every ounce of his heart on every play. That's more than I can say for some other first round prospects.
Round 2 (32nd overall)
Anthony Collins, OT Kansas. I think he's the last of a deep group of tackles that can play the left side. I think all the other LT's (Long, Clady, Otah, Williams) will be gone. Some might be asking what about Sam Baker from USC? IMO, he's not a prototypical LT for Parcells and co. With Collins and Carey, we've got two tackles that are interchangeable from left to right.
Round 2 (58th overall)
Patrick Lee, CB Auburn. Lee would be a pretty good steal at this point in the draft. I've got to think a corner is going to be the target with this pick. It's the deepest position in the draft arguably. I've liked Terrell Thomas the entire time, but there's talk that he may be better suited for safety. Gotta admit that scares the crap out of me.
Round 3 (65th overall)
Brad Cottam, TE Tennessee. Tight End is another position that is fairly deep from the second to fourth round area. We will target one somewhere around 2b to 4. My guess is that the Phins are high on Cottam after seeing him at the scouting combine run a 4.63. At 6 foot 8, 271 pounds and a 33 inch vertical, what is not to love about this guy? The injury history is the only concern, but his stock is rising and I see this being the round he's likely to go.
Round 4 (97th overall)
Oniel Cousins, G UTEP. Even though he's listed as a tackle, I'm thinking we'd project him as a natural guard. He's got tremendous athletic ability, but is a little undersized for the tackle position at 6-4 301.
Round 6 (189th overall)
Matt Flynn, QB LSU. This is where we take our qb in this draft. Flynn, a proven leader, will fit in very nicely on this young offense and grow with the other qb's we have (Beck and McCown). Other qb's to consider here Erick Ainge or Kevin O'Connell.
Round 7 (193rd overall)
Xavier Omon, RB Northwest Missouri State. A little sleeper pick, he lead division II with 2,337 yards and 37 touchdowns. at 5-11, 226 pounds, a nice fill for Ronnie Brown during those hot Miami afternoons.
The second mock assumes Jason Taylor is traded to the Vikings for a 2nd and 3rd round pick, that's the 48th and 74th overall. What this trade allows us to do is move up into the bottom of the first round if a player we covet is there. There are two players who I feel we could go hunting for if the timing is right, Branden Albert G from Virginia, who is now projected to go in the latter half of round one, or Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie whose stock continues to skyrocket after an impressive Senior Bowl week and Scouting Combine. How could we accomplish moving up into the first round? We could package our 32nd overall and our third round pick (65th overall) to get as high as around the 19th or 20th pick. I think that's what we'd have to do to get Cromartie ahead of teams like Tampa Bay and Dallas who may be looking for a corner. For arguements sake, lets just assume this is what we do, then our draft could look something like this:
1a Chris Long
1b Dominique Rodgers Cromartie
2a (48th overall) Chad Henne (Surely, I'd catch some flack for this, but it could happen)
2b (58th overall) Carl Nicks
3b (74th overall) Brad Cottam
4 Oniel Cousins
6 Caleb Campbell
7 Xavier Omon
